Two Minute Silence (Mr Allan)
We will observe a two minute silence at 11am today to remember and pay our respects to the victims of war. Today is Armistice Day, marking the end of the “Great War” in 1918.. A bell will ring and you should stand in silence in your class. We will lay poppy wreaths at the KHS war memorial during this time. After the silence, Cameron Hamilton (former pupil) will play the “Last Post” in the playground. This will be heard in many classes, especially with the windows open for ventilation. A bell will ring after this and your teacher will then show a specially prepared video assembly. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed. Any S6 pupils who do not have a class Period 3 are welcome to join us at the war memorial. Please wear a poppy.
Tutor Time (Mr Allan)
Please remember that school is closed tomorrow for a staff training day. From Monday, Tutor restarts and you should report first thing to your Tutor group. There are lists posted at reception and you will have been informed in other ways too. Tutor is usually 9 minutes long, but for next Monday only, this is extended until 9.10am.
Outdoor Clothing Rules (Mr Allan)
Classroom windows and doors should be open to allow air to circulate freely as good ventilation reduces the risk of potential Covid transmission. In winter, this will have an impact on classroom temperatures. To help you feel more comfortable in class, we are relaxing our usual rules.
From Monday, you are allowed to wear outdoor clothing (eg a hoodie or outdoor jacket) in class. The signs in all classes will be turned to show this. In some situations, for reasons of health and safety (eg in a science lab, kitchen or workshop), outdoor gear will still need to be removed. Clothing with offensive slogans or images is not suitable for school, plain dark colours are best. Also, hoods should not be worn over the head within the school building. The usual uniform (white shirt, tie etc) is still required.
If you require any support to stay warm in school, please see the PSO team. We should be able to help eg by gifting a coat or a jumper.

Lessons from Auschwitz Project 2021 – S5/6 Pupils! (Miss Osborne)
There are 3 places available for S5/6 pupils to take part in this fantastic project aimed at educating pupils about the Holocaust and consider its relevance today. The Holocaust was the murder of 6 million Jewish men, women and children by the Nazis and their collaborators – it was an event which would change the shape of Europe, and the world, forever. During the Project, participants will:
- Explore this challenging history by taking part in live sessions, led by experts in the history of the Holocaust
- Hear directly from Holocaust survivors, who will share their personal experiences, including a live survivor testimony and Q&A
- Virtually visit the most notorious site of the Holocaust, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum; and considering the relevance of this history in today’s world.
If you are interested in taking part in this amazing opportunity, please speak to Miss Osborne in B17 ASAP/before Friday. You do not need to be studying History to apply for this opportunity. The Project will take place in December this year!
S6 Prom (Mr Fulton)
The S6 Prom is booked for Friday the 17 June 2022 and is being held at Forrester Park, Cairneyhill. It will cost £40 per pupil, and we would like to encourage all S6 pupils who would plan to attend to pay at least £5 towards the price of their ticket by the end of the week.
Please make all payments using the iPayimpact system. If you are not registered for this, you can collect a letter from the office with instructions on how to set this up.
Scottish Youth Parliament Elections (Miss Young)
This week you have the chance to vote in the Scottish Youth Parliament elections. This allows you to have a real say in who is voicing opinions on your behalf in Parliament and real and important issues. There are 4 candidates running for Kirkcaldy, 2 of these are from KHS, Ramiza Ahmad in S6 and Karam Aslam in S3. If you have social subjects on Monday you will have a chance to vote during class time – if not then please go on and vote!!
You can go onto GLOW where there are tiles installed on the Fife council tabs for the Youth Parliament to allow you to read the candidate profiles and vote. REMEMBER – voting is confidential – others should not know who you voted for. Don’t allow anyone to vote on your behalf as your vote matters. This helps make a true democratic result!
