Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 4/6/21

Dear Parent/Carer

It’s been a shorter week for pupils with teachers very busy moderating and verifying assessments in line with the SQA’s “Alternative Certification” model yesterday and today. Our staff have been involved in online meetings with teachers from other Fife schools, agreeing standards at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. I’m pleased to report that this has gone well. It’s been a huge amount of work for the teachers and I must commend them for their efforts. Of course, it has also been difficult and stressful for our young people too. Well done to those doing their best in these very trying circumstances.

The SQA have now published guidance on the Appeals process which will be in place this year. Details of these are on the SQA Website. We are entering the final stages of the assessment cycle and are on track to be able to share the “provisional results” with you, and with the candidates, around June 23. Mrs Davidson is inviting S6 leavers to be in school that day to collect a letter with the grades at the same time they pick up their yearbook and leavers’ hoodie. You will be emailed.

I’ve mentioned previously that Covid restrictions mean that we can’t have primary kids in the building for now. However, we are delivering a really good online transition. The video clips which are being collated by Mr Young on our “YouTube” channel.

After all the disruption over the last year, we are hoping Session 2021-22 will look a bit more ”normal’. Pupils will be expected to be back in full school uniform from August – black trousers/skirt (no leggings), white shirt/polo shirt, black jumper/cardigan (no hoodies), school tie and black shoes/trainers. Blazers are available through Academy Uniforms for £34.50, sizing guide on website and we have some blazers in school, BE Schoolwear, from £30.50 link: or other outlets. BE have a shop at 36 High Street, Kirkcaldy. Orders placed through Academy Uniforms by 2 July will be delivered free of charge to school and can be collected on Mon 9 August, 10-11am.

Unfortunately, for the time being, a face mask is more or less part of our uniform too. Please encourage your son/daughter to have their own reusable covering. We will issue paper masks if required but it’s not ideal from a litter or a sustainability point of view.

I mentioned leavers earlier. For those moving on in the next week or two, please remember to return textbooks to teachers so we can reissue these for the new classes. Also, young people who have borrowed a laptop or been loaned a Chromebook will need to return these now too. Above all, best wishes to all those about to take the next steps after KHS.

Next week is again a shorter one with Monday being a public holiday. We have catch up DTP vaccinations taking place on the Tuesday and we’ll be presenting our new Prefects with their badges on Wednesday.

Finally, and looking further ahead, we have just confirmed all the dates for the session ahead in our new calendar. Having undertaken appropriate research, we now have a way of setting up online parents’ evenings. The first of these will be for S3 on Wednesday 22 September. We’ll share all the login details etc after the summer holidays. These begin from Friday 25 June this year.

And on that optimistic note, it’s maybe appropriate to sign off until next week!

Very best wishes to you.

Derek Allan
