Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 3/6/16

Dear Parent/Carer

I hope that you are well and are looking forward to the holiday weekend. Please remember that the school is off on Monday and we return to the new timetable on Tuesday. Those pupils changing House and Guidance Teacher will have had a letter home. The updated Tutor list, with classrooms, will be posted at reception on Tuesday morning.

We’ve had a good week in school with a busy event taking place in our refectory on Tuesday. This was our Primary 7 “STEAM” Collaborative event – a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths project. We also had another Science event on Wednesday with S2 pupils taking part in the Salter’s Festival of Chemistry at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Both events were great learning experiences … and great fun.

Then, on Wednesday evening, Umar Mohammed and Kyle Pitcaithly competed very well in the national final of the Procurator Fiscals’ Public Speaking Competition at the High Court in Parliament House, Edinburgh. The judging panel, led by Alex Prentice QC, who was lead prosecutor in the Liam Fee murder trial, had an exceptionally difficult task. In the end, we lost out narrowly to Fernhill Independent School from Glasgow. Well done to them. I am very proud of Umar and Kyle – they have been great ambassadors for the school – and are officially, East of Scotland Public Speaking Champions.

Today is our S2 Linked Learning Day … and it is going very well. Pupils are completing a set of teamwork challenges which involve role play and problem solving in the context of an emergency response situation. It’s an outdoor learning activity, so we have been blessed by the weather.

We also had our Go4SET Science team taking part in the national final at Glasgow City Chambers today. This is a very prestigious “STEM” competition … and I have only just learned that our team have won it! Well done to Megan Jobson, Dylan Jobson, Chloe Paton, Rachel Suttie and John Hamilton. The team was very well supported by Miss Tennant and had brilliant backing from Brand-Rex Ltd Glenrothes, especially Kennedy Miller from the company. We are the champions!

As I say, we resume on Tuesday with the new timetable. In the evening there is a special Civic Reception at the Townhouse to honour Fife pupils who were winners in the recent World Burns Federation finals. I’m delighted to say that this includes our own Louise Wallace, who will be singing for the Provost.

We have Year Group Assemblies on the Wednesday and after school, all our new Prefects will receive their badges and certificates. We’ll also present Saltire Volunteering Awards, Sports Colours and announce the new Head Boy, Head Girl and Depute team. Our special guest is Lesley MacDonald – former KHS pupil and captain of the Scotland netball team. Friday is our S6 Induction Day and Mr Farquharson is putting together a varied programme for the day.

Please see attached a copy of a letter from Mrs Davidson.  It gives full details about uniform, including blazer ordering online.

Next week’s hot dish menu is; Monday: Spaghetti Bolognese with garlic bread. Tuesday: Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and mash. Wednesday: Macaroni cheese with chips or garlic bread, Thursday: Steak pie and potatoes. Friday: Fish and chips. We also have our pasta, sandwich, soup and salad options too.

I hope this gives you a flavour of what we have been up to, and what we’ll be up to next. Should you have any enquiries, do be in touch.

Best wishes

Derek Allan
