Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 22/4/16

Dear Parent/Carer

I hope you are well.

The week past has been a hectic one with Assemblies looking at the forthcoming learning transitions our young people will face, the dangers of high sugar intake and fizzy drinks, and the SQA exam arrangements (for S4-6).

On Tuesday, we had a great day with our visitors from Nehalennia School in the Netherlands, and I must thank Talia, Hannah and Brogan for their excellent inputs to our discussions on health and wellbeing matters. Our new Dutch friends also met our LGBT support group at lunchtime and saw the YMCA outreach activities showcase in school.

Yesterday was a full day. We had judges from “Education Scotland” speaking to staff, partners and large number of pupils about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) learning. Our young people were exceptional and the Scottish Education Awards finals are in Glasgow on June 8.

Next week we have our Leavers’ Assemblies, when the S6 are given complete control! After school on Monday, our U16 Footballers will contest the Fife Cup Final versus Glenrothes. The match takes place at the Kelty Hearts Junior ground at 5pm. On Tuesday evening there is a special dinner in order to mark the youth work of the Kirkcaldy Rotary. Leah Bidgood and Lachlan Duncan (RYLA Awards) will attend. On Thursday it’s the Junior UK Maths Challenge and the Bob Docherty Football Tournament in the afternoon. The Friday will be the last day in school for our S4-6 exam candidates and I should remind you that Monday 2 May is a Public Holiday and Thursday 5 May is an In-Service Day, timed to coincide with the Holyrood elections. The first of the SQA exams is the day before – Wednesday 4 May.

On the theme of exams, please see attached a copy of the letter issued to candidates this week, and also our “Masterclass” timetable. Before every exam, there is an opportunity to come in to school to do some last minute supervised study. Thanks to the staff for working flexibly to support this.

One wee bit of staff news before closing. Congratulations to Mrs Armstrong of the Home Economics Department, who gave birth to a beautiful baby boy called Harri last Friday. We all wish them both well.

Please do be in touch if we can assist with any school matters.

Yours

Derek Allan
