At Calaiswood our hydro-therapy pool is in constant use – we all have the opportunity to get into the pool at least once a week for either swimming lessons or therapy sessions. We also share the pool with pupils from other schools and the physiotherapy team run sessions for identified local families throughout the week.
We have lots of equipment to help develop our swimming skills: arm bands and various types of floats to allow us to be independent in the pool; sinking pool toys to encourage us to get under the water and woggles and pool buoys to help us with stroke development. For those of us using the pool for therapy sessions floats and woggles give support during our stretches and the constant temperature of the water means that we don’t get too cold even when our movements are limited.
We also have a small hot pool and the pool itself has underwater lighting and sound, a bubble seat and floor geysers – enhancing the sensory effect of the pool for many of us. As our pool was designed with us all in mind, hoists and tracking are built in to ensure that everyone has access to all of the facilities.
Our pool is also in use over weekends and school holidays. The Parent Council organise a rota for use of the pool by pupils and their families and hire a lifeguard to keep everyone safe.
