Visit to Skinflats Woods Day 4

Last Friday there were only seventeen of us because five were off. We went to the woods to learn about the life cycle of the maple tree.

We stopped at the horse chestnut tree but there were no conkers because it was still the wrong time of year.

We found a good big tree that we could sit next to and Mrs. Lennie could read us a book called “The Life Cycle of the Maple Tree”.

We learned about how different trees and plants have different shaped seeds. The seeds can be spread in different ways and Lauren found the only helicopter seed.

We all went searching for seeds. We found one helicopter seed. We found out that it travels by the wind. Conkers drop from horse chestnut trees. Seeds with parachutes travel with the wind as well. There are seeds in blackberries. Birds eat the blackberry but they can’t digest the seed inside and when birds poo they drop out the seed and this makes a new plant. Seeds are in all fruit. We found a maggot inside a rosehip. Maggots are fly larva. When we got to the woods we only had ten minutes left in the woods. In that ten minutes we went looking inside pine cones but we never saw any seeds. Mrs. Lennie had an app on her i-phone to identify the trees from the pine cones and needly cones. The tree that we were sitting beside was a Scots Pine. We found a leaf skeleton. The wee ones got a lift back to school from Mrs. Granville. After they left we did ten-second sprints every 5 minutes to keep us fit.
