English

Aims and Objectives

It is the aim of the English Department to provide teaching and learning of the highest quality, in a stimulating, inclusive and safe environment.  We work to help pupils achieve well on their courses, and to develop skills and confidence in preparation for the world beyond school.

Ethos:  The English Department promotes an ethos of collegiality, mutual respect and professionalism among its staff; collaboration and cross-curricular activities with other subject areas in the school and other agencies in the community; and positive interactions between staff and pupils and their parents.  Pupils and staff should enjoy their time in English.

The English Department accommodates all of the school’s pupils from S1 to the end of S4.  Under the new Scottish curricular arrangements, S1 to S3 pupils now follow the Broad General Education course.  In the Senior Phase, all S4 pupils follow a course at either National 2, 3, 4 or 5 level; S5 and S6 pupils can then go on to opt for National 4, 5 or Higher courses; and S6 pupils who have achieved a good pass at Higher English can opt for the Advanced Higher course.

  • As well as focusing on reading, writing, listening and talking skills, the English Department promotes the capacities of CfE in terms of learning and teaching activities that encourage participation, creativity, enthusiasm, effective communication skills, critical thinking, transferrable skills, meaningful research, independent learning, confidence, citizenship and involvement in the wider community.
