Williamwood STEAMS Ahead

October 31, 2019 by Miss Clelland

The 24th October saw Williamwood turn STEM into STEAM by adding arts into the fair. The Art and Design Department teamed up with Fashion and Textiles to put on a fantastic, colourful, fun and inclusive fashion show with a focus on raising issues around the textiles industry and sustainability. The runway show featured participants from all levels ranging from P7-S6. There was a sustainable open call competition launched at the feeder primary schools and superb entries came from Busby Netherlee and Carolside strutting their stuff down the runway. They were followed by the Fashion and Textiles department who ‘upcycled’ garments from local charity shops with a budget of £10.00. Next, it was the turn of the S6 students to strut their stuff in the ‘Prom under £10.00 collection’, where we saw garments ranging from flapper dresses to double breasted suits that could be envy of any Prom evening. The art and design department followed on by launching a wonderful set of wearable sculptures and paper collections down the catwalk with music to match, the show continued with a display of final pieces from our S4, 5 and 6 cohort. The finale of the show was a special collection brought to us by former pupil and successful fashion designer Yasmine Moy. Yasmine designed a collection that focussed on the theme of shelter and homelessness using recycled and sustainable materials, the collection was modelled by our S6 boys. The crowd was bustling and the fashion show certainly launched the STEAM fair 2019 with a bang.
Thank you to all who came to see the show and a huge thank you to all everyone who took part in the running, modelling, and engineering of this hugely successful event.
