Scottish Studies – Level 3
COURSE
The Level 3 course is divided into three main units, in addition to this, pupils will be asked to complete a Scotland in Focus Unit.
CONTENT
History
Historical Study – Pupils will develop detailed knowledge and understanding of the Scottish Wars of Independence
Pupils will study:
- The succession crisis in Scotland
- The role of King John Balliol and King Edward in Scotland
- William Wallace
- Robert Bruce, 1286-1309
- Robert Bruce, 1310-28
Historical Study – Pupils will develop detailed knowledge and understanding of the Atlantic Slave trade and its links with Glasgow
Pupils will study:
- Triangular Trade
- The organisation of the slave trade
- The Middle Passage
- Glasgow and the Slave Trade
- Abolitionist Movement
Modern Studies
Modern Studies: Democracy in Scotland and the United Kingdom- Pupils will develop a detailed knowledge of Democracy in Scotland and the United Kingdom
Pupils will study:
- Living in a Democracy
- Differences between communism and fascism
- The Scottish Parliament
- Westminster Parliament
- Devolved and Reserved Powers
- The work of an MSP, MP and Local Councillor
- Participation
English
English: Understanding language – Pupils will study a simple Scots text with a focus on Scots and Scottish dialect.
Pupils will study:
- The History of the Scots language
- Scottish Short Story ‘All that Glisters’
- Commonly used Scots words in everyday life
Scotland in Focus Unit- Individual Assignment
To gain the Level 3 Scottish Studies Award, pupils must pass the Scotland in Focus Unit. The topic that we study for the Scotland in Focus Unit is the Scottish Independence Referendum and pupils are given a learning log to work through to help them structure their research. The added value unit will be assessed and time will be devoted to the research and planning of the presentation in class. There will be a variety of research tools available to pupils.
TYPICAL LESSON
Your Scottish Studies lessons will include a variety of different learning opportunities such as:

HOW WILL IT BE ASSESSED?
There is no external course assessment and to receive a Level 3 award, pupils must pass all of the internal assessment as well as the Scotland in Focus Unit.
