Mathematics – National 5

Following the completion of the Broad General Education (BGE) in February of S3, pupils will then begin working on their National Qualification course.

National 5 Mathematics

Course Outline

National 5 Mathematics aims to build upon the skills learned within curriculum for excellence and extend candidates’ mathematical thinking. Students should recognise problem solving as essential in being able to apply their mathematical skills in a real life context.

As well as preparing students for real life, emphasis is placed on developing an appreciation of the power of mathematical language and the efficiency of algorithms in preparation for the Higher course.

What opportunities will be available to me when I finish?

The skills and knowledge of mathematics gained at National 5 level is useful in many technological, vocational, scientific, social and                                  environmental contexts.  Career paths available following successful completion of National 5 mathematics include:
