Mandarin – National 5

COURSE

This is a 2 year course aimed at pupils already achieving well in French.

All four skills of Talking, Listening, Reading and Writing are developed using materials which will be of interest to the pupils and which will provide them with a good level of language competence.

The course is fast paced and will involve regular learning of vocabulary and grammar. Homework will be frequent and may be quite demanding.

CONTENT 

The course is divided into 4 contexts which cover : 

  • Society – Family and friends, Lifestyles, Media, Global languages, Citizenship
     
  • Learning – Learning in context, Education
     
  • Employability – Jobs, Work and CVs
     
  • Culture – Planning a trip, Other countries, Celebrating a special event, Literature of another country, Film and television

HOW WILL IT BE ASSESSED?

Course Assignment: Writing

Learners will produce a piece of writing in Mandarin of 150-250 Chinese characters, based on one of the following contexts: society, learning or culture. The assignment writing has a total allocation of 20 marks (scaled to 15 marks).

Performance: Talking

The purpose of this performance is to carry out a spoken presentation and conversation in the modern language from at least 2 of the following contexts: society, learning, employability or culture. The performance has a total mark allocation of 30 marks.

Presentation = 10 marks & the Conversation = 20 marks

Question Paper 1: Reading and Writing

The purpose of this question paper is to allow learners to demonstrate breadth, challenge and application in the skills of reading and writing.

The question paper has 50 marks.

The question paper is sub-divided into 2 components: Reading: 30 marks and Writing: 20 marks (writing is scaled to 15 marks).

Section 1 – Reading: Learners will read 3 texts in the modern language and respond to the questions in English. The use of a dictionary is permitted.

Section 2 – Writing: Learners will produce one written text of 150-200 words in Chinese characters in response to a job advert stimulus, supported by six bullet points, which the learner must address. The use of a dictionary is permitted.

Question Paper 2: Listening

The purpose of this listening paper is to allow learners to demonstrate breadth, challenge and application in the skill of listening.

The question paper has 20 marks (scaled to 30 marks).

Learners listen to one monologue and answer questions in English worth 8 marks. They then listen to one conversation and respond to questions worth 12 marks.
