The 12th of September sees Williamwood’s annual S1 information evening for parents. Those who visit the Science department will find out information about our courses, including our password-protected online resources for each S1 and S2 unit.

The Williamwood High School STEM fair will take place on Wednesday 11 October. The event has previously shown itself to be an exciting evening, showcasing engaging science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experiments, interesting puzzles and a range of games. A number of our exceptional partners involved in STEM industries are signed up to attend and provide experiments and displays which are different from those normally provided within our classes. There will also be competitions for pupils to take part in, more details of which will follow soon.

The main aim of the fair is to improve and aid the transition from primary to secondary, and as such, an invite is extended to all P6 and P7 pupils in our feeder primary schools. All pupils in S1 and S2 are also invited.

Further information regarding the fair shall be relayed to parents in the near future.

The Williamwood Science faculty is proud to recognise and praise the achievements of its pupils. For the last four years, merit badges have been awarded to pupils who have fulfilled the criteria shown below.

This week 22 pupils from our feeder primary schools visited the Williamwood Science Department to compete in the cluster final of the K’Nex challenge; an event organised by Glasgow University’s Science Connects department. All P6 pupils take part in the challenge within their own school and the fortunate pupils chosen to take part in the final were given the daunting challenge of designing a crane.

Congratulations to Jennifer and Erin from Busby Primary School for their superb winning entry. Shown below, it was designed to have multiple ways of lifting objects, as well as an innovative “lock” in order to secure them if required.

All of the participants were a huge credit to themselves and their schools and the competition was exceptionally hard to judge! Images of the other cranes can be found HERE.

Every pupil in S1 and S2 has access to science homework booklets and a range of electronic revision materials through our website by following the tab links to the individual topics.

Pupils will be prompted to enter a password to access the resources (this can be obtained from any science teacher).

These materials will hopefully allow parents to help children with their homework, revision and preparation for assessments by having access to some of the teaching and learning resources used by pupils in science.

Pupils should not hesitate to speak to their science teacher for advice should they encounter any difficulty in accessing revision materials through the science website.

At the end of April, pupils from our feeder primary schools visited our department for one of the highlights of our year. The K’Nex challenge is an event that is organised by Glasgow University as part of the Glasgow Science festival and all P6 pupils in the cluster took part in classroom challenges, before the best 20 headed to Williamwood for a competitive cluster final.

Given the task of designing a crane, the pupils came up with some fantastic solutions. Congratulations to Eva and Isabella from Carolside Primary School for their winning entry which is shown below. The two girls will now compete in the West of Scotland final and we wish them lots of luck!

Many thanks to the fantastic Primary 7 pupils who joined us from Busby, Carolside and Netherlee Primary schools to take part in the Primary 7 Science club. The pupils had a great time making and launching rockets, completing a germ investigation and burning magnesium. The Teachers at Williamwood were very impressed with your energy, enthusiasm and scientific skills and we look forward to working with you again very soon.

Our popular lunch-time Science club for S1 pupils has restarted after the summer. Running in two six-week blocks and taking place on a Wednesday at lunchtime, pupils will complete a set of fun experiments that are not included in the standard curriculum, such as making bath bombs and fire writing.

The dates for the Science club are as follows:

Block 1 – Wednesday 6th September to 11th October

Block 2 – Wednesday 10th January to 14th February.

Pupils are invited to attend as many sessions as they like; they can even bring their lunch.
