Tea With a Refugee

Thank you to Bill Clark from LFA, Alex Deng from the Scottish Refugee Council and Mr and Mrs Wuga for visiting the department today as part of Holocaust Memorial Day 2018. Pupils and staff heard moving stories about their experiences and now have a deeper understanding of issues facing modern day refugees.

London Trip

Social Subjects pupils enjoyed a fantastic two day visit to London where they were treated to a bus tour of the capital, a flight on the London Eye, a tour of Parliament, a trip to Winter Wonderland, dinner and a West End show. More photographs of the trip can be found on the school Twitter page. Merry Christmas!

Sponsored Silence

Well done to the boys in the Social Subjects Club who raised over £100 for Refuweegee this week by doing a sponsored silence during school. The Glasgow charity were the victims of a robbery recently, so the club wanted to help by giving their teachers some peace for a day!

Volunteering

Thank you to East Renfrewshire Foodbank in Barrhead for inviting Higher Modern Studies pupils to volunteer in their warehouse for the afternoon. The pupils, who are studying inequality in the UK, got a hands-on experience of the problems faced by people struggling in their local community.

Question Time 2017

Well done to the Advanced Higher Modern Studies class for organising a very lively Question Time event for over 100 pupils, parents and staff last week. Thank you to Councillor Euan Blockley (Conservative), Kirsten Oswald (SNP), Ellie (S6), Councillor Paul O’Kane (Labour) and Ross Greer MSP (Green) for being such excellent panellists.

Thank You

Ag and Stan gave a fantastic talk to Higher Modern Studies pupils today about their work with the East Renfrewshire Foodbank. The pupils learned about the reasons why people use their service, which will be very useful for the Social Issues in the UK topic as well as making them more empathetic about the circumstances of those less fortunate.

Foodbank Collection

Thank you to all pupils, parents and staff for their donations to the East Renfrewshire Foodbank totalling 269kg – this is enough to feed 27 individuals or 12 large families for three days. Modern Studies pupils will be visiting the Barrhead distribution point later this month to learn more about poverty in their local area as part of the Higher course.

AH University Visit

Advanced Higher English, History and Modern Studies pupils visited the Andersonian library at Strathclyde University last week to research their dissertations. Thank you to the librarians for allowing us access to use their resources which will be invaluable for S6 projects this year.
