Many thanks to all our sixth year that took part in selling poppies or who attended the various rememberence services. They are an assest not only to the school but importantly themselves.

 

Attached below is the perspective for courses on offer for a January start at Glasgow Clyde College at the Cardonald Campus. If you are interested in a course and securing a place please speak to your Pastoral Support Teacher or Mr. Cumming.

Many thanks to all the parents, carers and pupils who came  along last night to the various application groups. It was great to see so many people attending. Many thanks also to our contributors who provided a full indepth knowledge of the profession and the route which pupils can follow to reach their career goals.

 

The University of Glasgow is holding it’s annual workshops for pupils interested in teaching within Catholic education at the University of Glasgow on Monday 9 December and Wednesday 11 December.

The workshop is aimed at S5 or S6 pupils interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in Education and considering teaching within Catholic education. As you may know the University of Glasgow offers the Catholic Teacher’s Certificate in Religious Education (CTC) as an optional part of the undergraduate degrees in Education. The CTC is mandatory for anyone wishing to teach within a Catholic school.

The workshop aims to give pupils a comprehensive overview of the CTC and an opportunity to speak to members of the academic staff. The day will also include mass for anyone who wishes to take part and an alternative. Lunch will also be provided for all those attending.

The workshop will take place in the Turnbull Hall in the University of Glasgow Catholic Chaplaincy, which is located on 13-15 Southpark Terrace. Pupils are asked to report to the Turnbull Hall by 10:15 and will be finished by 14:30. The workshop will run on Monday 9 December and Wednesday 11 December. The maximum capacity for both days is 70 and places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Applican’s Medicine Practical Afternoon Course which will take place this year on the 24th March from 12-4pm, at the University of Strathclyde. The taster afternoon would be suitable for S5 pupils, and will cover a range of topics relating to medicine and the medical school application process.

To cover the costs of the event, pupil’s are asked to pay£5 for the session.

For the last 2 years this event has been fully booked and we operate at first come first served with a waiting list – therefore we would highly recommend your pupils sign up as soon as possible!

The itinerary for the afternoon is as follows:

12pm – 1pm: Entry to medicine, Personal Statements

1pm – 1:45pm: Situational Judgement UKCAT Teaching

1:45pm – 2pm: Quick break and snacks!

2pm – 3:45pm: First Aid, Anatomy, History taking, Blood pressure, Stethoscope workshops.

3:45 – 4pm: Questions and Answers.

Applican’s Medicine Practical Afternoon Course

The applications for the Medic Insight Week Programme is now open  and will close on the 10/03/19 at midnight. The link to the application form is posted on their FaceBook page as well as a copy of the link attached below.

All young people on Facebook are encouraged to follow this page for the most up to date information regarding the programmes Medic Insight offer.

All pupils are reminded that applications are usually very competitive, so should take time when filling out the form (treating as a practice for applications to Medicine should prove useful to them and also increase chances of being successful). Also, as places are very competitive there are many high quality applications which may be unsuccessful, but this should not deter them from applying to Medicine!

Fifth year students have been asked to volunteer to take part in a study called ‘Be on the TEAM’ This study will see if immunising teenagers with a Meningitis B (MenB) vaccine could reduce the risk of others getting meningitis across the whole community

What is the ‘Be on the TEAM’ study?

• Pupils who take part will receive 2 doses of a MenB vaccine
• These are licensed vaccines you would not otherwise receive  and will reduce your risk of meningitis
• They will also require to have 2 throat swabs, 1 year apart
• Visits would be held at your school, with follow up community visits for pupil who leave school during the study period.

The NHS team will be in school Monday 4th April to begin the study.

The application process is now open for the Sutton Trusts flagship UK Summer Schools. Thirteen partner universities will be hosting week long residentials for students to explore what university life is really like.

Young people who apply and are successful get the chance to explore a subject of their choice and experience taster lectures, workshops and social activities completely free of charge.

Any fifth year student who’d be interested in applying should register at summerschools.suttontrust.com to find out more. Applications close at 5pm Thursday 28th February.
