Women in Engineering

Women in Engineering Programme is now open for Applications. This four day hybrid event will introduce candidates to the exciting world of engineering and the vast range of apprenticeships and careers available. They will learn more about what it is like to work for BAE Systems, gain hands-on experience in a in an engineering environment and explore the range of career pathways available. Opportunities are available for school and college leavers, as well as individuals seeking a new challenge. The programme will be delivered as hybrid learning, with some on-site activity and some virtual learning, across four separate dates in January and February 2024.  Upon successful completion of the experience candidates may be offered a full time position on one of BAE Systems Engineering Apprenticeships, starting in autumn 2024. NHS Virtual Work Experience

St Ninian’s High School S6 2022-2023 The NHS Allied Healthcare Virtual Work Experience programme is now accepting students in years S3-S6 onto February’s session. During the work experience day, students will follow 2 patients from their initial presentation to recovery. They will gain a unique insight into how patients interact with a variety of healthcare professionals and what it’s like to work in an NHS multidisciplinary team. This includes: – Nursing – Midwifery – Paramedicine – Physiotherapy – Occupational Therapy – Dietetics – Radiography – Prosthetics and Orthotics – Speech and Language Therapy – Pharmacy Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals throughout each day. This will empower students to make informed career decisions and demonstrate their commitment to healthcare in their UCAS applications. Once they’ve registered, students will be emailed links to their virtual work experience portals. Students are awarded a Work Experience Certificate for every session they complete. Those who complete the full 5-month programme will be awarded a Highly Commended Reference from the Presidents of Allied Healthcare Mentor. These are fantastic additions to their CVs! Engineering the Future for Girls 2023

Applications Open Monday 16th January 2023 The University of Strathclyde, in collaboration with BAM Nuttall, the Weir Group and West Fraser, are delighted to be offering the Engineering the Future for Girls programme for female school pupils in S3 in person again after two years hosting the programme virtually. 100 girls will be invited to attend from the 5th – 8th June  2023. The attached flyer provides an overview of the four-day programme and we ask that you bring this to the attention of S3 girls, particularly those that have a talent for mathematics or physical sciences. Participants will hear from staff at the University and colleagues from BAM Nuttall, the Weir Group and West Fraser who will provide an insight into studying and working in the field of engineering. They will also partake in a number of practical activities run by University of Strathclyde staff and engineers. The programme is fully-funded by BAM Nuttall, the Weir Group and West Fraser and all student costs, including a contribution towards travel costs, will be covered. The programme is non-residential and therefore pupils should be able to make their way each day to the Strathclyde University Campus in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. Teachers are not required to accompany pupils.  For the pupils’ convenience, we will arrange for Mentors to accompany pupils from and to Queen Street train station, Glasgow Central train station and Buchanan Bus Station at the start and end of each day. SQA Modern Apprenticeship Program 2021 We are inviting applications for a two-year Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration at the Scottish Qualifications Authority. There are two places available for a work experience with Anderson’s Landscaping, a company that carries out landscaping projects in clients’ gardens.  The work experience runs on the following dates: ·         Monday 28th, Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th of June from  8am-4pm ·         Monday 5th, Tuesday 6th, and Wednesday 7th July 8am-4pm.  This would be a fantastic opportunity for any pupil as landscaping a garden requires planning, working Landscaping architects, as well as artistic and creative skills.  This would also provide a good insight into how projects are managed.  If you are interested please see Miss Green or Mrs Ward.

The Open University’s Young Applicants in Schools Scheme (YASS)

YASS is a national bridging programme supporting pupils in preparing for the transition to Higher Education. It offers S6 students the opportunity to study university level 1 modules online alongside their other subjects. Pupils are offered a choice of modules from a range of subject areas including Business, Languages, STEM and Law, with modules carrying 10 or 30 credits at SCQF level 7.  The scheme is fully endorsed and funded by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and students in local authority schools are entitled to fully funded places. YASS attainment is also included in the Scottish Government’s Insight framework.  YASS provides pupils with experience of HE level study, a breadth of subject areas beyond the school curriculum and experience of supportive, online, independent learning.
