Discovering Engineering with S2 Girls

Young WEIR-WISE: Discovering Engineering with S2 Girls

The University of Strathclyde, in partnership with the Weir Group, is offering the Young WEIR-WISE programme again in January 2027. The programme is aimed at female S2 pupils, particularly those with an interest or talent in mathematics or physical sciences.

Applications open: 4 September 2026

Application Deadline: 5 October 2026

Please note: this year, Young WEIR-WISE will be delivered entirely in person on campus. Unlike previous years, there will be no online session.

What is Young WEIR-WISE?

The programme gives pupils the opportunity to explore engineering, university study and engineering careers through a range of activities at the University of Strathclyde.

A total of 200 girls will be selected to attend one of the two-day sessions:

  • Session 1: 11–12 January 2027 (2 days on campus)
  • Session 2: 14–15 January 2027 (2 days on campus)

Both sessions run from 9:30am–3:30pm each day.

During the programme, pupils will:

  • Find out more about studying engineering at university.
  • Hear from staff at the University of Strathclyde and the Weir Group about engineering careers and their experiences.
  • Take part in practical activities led by university staff and engineers.
  • Learn more about the different opportunities available within engineering.

Costs and travel

The programme is funded by the Weir Group, so there is no cost for pupils to attend.

The programme is non-residential, so pupils will need to travel to and from the University of Strathclyde campus in central Glasgow each day.

Up to £300 in travel expenses can be reimbursed per pupil to cover travel and/or accommodation.

Teachers do not need to accompany pupils. For those travelling via public transport, student mentors will be available to meet pupils at Glasgow Queen Street, Glasgow Central and Buchanan Bus Station at the start and end of each day.

How to apply

Pupils can apply from 4 September 2026. The application form will be available on the Young WEIR-WISE website: https://www.strath.ac.uk/engineering/outreach/weir-wise/

As part of the application, pupils will need to provide the name and contact details of a teacher who can provide a supporting statement. The teacher will receive an automated email with a link to submit their statement online.

Teacher statement deadline: 12 October 2026

Pupils will be notified of their application decision on or before 26 October 2026.

We would be grateful if this opportunity could be shared with female S2 pupils, particularly those who enjoy or have an interest in maths, science and engineering.
