Trainee Engineer
Base Location: Dundee, Perth, Argyll, Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Caithness, Shetland
Salary: Circa £23,422 per annum + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances, and wellbeing. Salary upon finishing the trainee engineer programme is circa £33,000 per annum.
Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time
Start Date: August 2025
Our Trainee Engineer programme lasts for three years and combines academic study with work-based experience.
Working within our Transmission business, you’ll have the opportunity to study towards a HNC and Diploma in Higher Education in Energy Engineering.
When not studying, you will balance your time on placements within Transmission, which may include working on site and in the field, or working alongside experienced SSE engineers and crafts people. You will have opportunities to work towards becoming a Low Voltage Switcher and then work towards High Voltage Switching (which makes the Network safe to work on, maintains Network integrity and resilience whilst ensuring safe and reliable supply of electricity), and become more involved in the daily operation, repair and future design of the future Network whilst supporting the drive towards a Transmission NetZero.
By the time you reach the third year of the programme you’ll be given increased responsibility in managing jobs, including technical aspects, safety management and the supervision of crafts people.
On completion of your programme, you will be qualified to work as one of the following disciplines Maintenance, Project Design Engineering, or an Operational Engineer.
The Transmission Trainee Engineer programme is designed to build the foundation blocks of your career within the Transmission business, providing you with great opportunities to be exposed to engineering excellence across our business whilst developing your academic, theoretical and practical skills. This will provide you with an excellent opportunity to become the Power Engineer of the future.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to be:
– Highly organised and self-driven with the ability to manage your time well.
– Flexible in your approach to work to maximise your chances of success, and you should be happy working alone or as part of a team.
– Comfortable to spend some time living away from home whilst attending college or on placements across SSE.
For entrance onto the educational aspect of our programme it’s important that you have, or expect to achieve the below qualifications prior to starting the programme in August 2025:
– 1 Scottish Higher at grade C or above in Maths or Physics OR
– 1 A level at grade D or above in Maths or Physics OR
– NC/NQ Engineering at SCQF level 6 or equivalent OR the completion of a Foundation Apprenticeship Engineering
Please note, we will not be able to accept your application if you have a HNC, HND or DipHE in Energy Engineering or an engineering related degree.
