Clyde Marine Training work on behalf of some of the biggest shipping companies in the world to select and train candidates to become part of the next generation of Merchant Navy Officers.
You will enjoy fully-paid tuition fees and a monthly sponsorship fee of £750 whilst you study for three years – both in-class and at sea – at Scotland and the UKs finest maritime education facilities.
Deck Officers in the Merchant Navy are vital members of a vessel’s onboard management team. Performing the role, also known as a Navigation Officer, means you’ll be working on sophisticated and expensive vessels. You’ll be in charge of valuable cargo and/or passengers so it’s a big responsibility.
While on duty at sea, you’ll be responsible for making decisions on steering and manoeuvring the ship, controlling navigation and communications. In port, you’ll be responsible for cargo handling and ship stability.
As Deck Officer, you’ll also be heavily involved in the day to day safety of the vessel. All crew need to work as a team to maintain the ship and its equipment at optimum efficiency.
This is a diverse role and every day is different, with your ultimate goal to become Captain of your own vessel.
What will I learn?
Study towards internationally recognised qualifications – HNC /HND and Professional Diplomas available.
You will also receive a Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) Certificate of Competency upon qualification.
You will learn how to lead people in a highly pressurised environment, understanding your role as part of a management team.
And you will navigate across the world’s oceans to ensure your ship’s crew and cargo arrive safely at their destination.
What qualification or qualities are required?
You’ll have a head start in this vacancy if you’ve completed a Foundation Apprenticeship in a related field. We’ll need you to provide evidence of your qualification and show you gained the relevant skills from your placement
All courses comprise of three years of study split into five phases, three of which are spent at college with the remaining two at sea.
HNC/HND route – You must hold a minimum of four qualifications including Maths, English and one science-based subject at 4-9 for A-C for National 5s and 1-3 for Standard Grades.
Scottish Professional Diploma (SPD) / Foundation Degree (FD) route – You must hold at least 48 UCAS points from Highers or A-Levels including maths and/or physics, plus the qualifications indicated for the HNC/D course.
BSc Hons route – in addition to HNC/HND qualifications, you must hold at least 104 UCAS points from Highers, A-Levels and/or degree (for engineering this must include a numerate subject).
