Autumn Work

Have a look at some of the activities Primary 1d have been taking part in over the season of Autumn.

The children have been working hard to identify missing sounds in words.

All pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and use the class camera to photograph their work. Well done, boys and girls, the photographs are excellent!

I have explored numbers, understanding that they represent quantities, and I can use them to count, create sequences and describe order.

The children have been using ‘adding monsters’ and cubes to help them understand the concept of adding.

I use practical materials and can ‘count on and back’ to help me to understand addition and subtraction, recording my ideas and solutions in different ways.

Teamwork makes the dream work! Some of the children built a house for Mrs Gear in the open area.

Building Bridges & Creating Games

The boys and girls from P1a, 1b and 1d had loads of fun during Muddy Movers time. The challenge was to build bridges. Some children wanted to build bridges between the raised planters.

They soon found out they had to work as a team.

“We need to make sure it doesn’t wobble and someone falls off.”

Within real and imaginary situations, I share experiences and feelings, ideas and information in a way that communicates my message.

They used their imagination to make it into a fun game.

“We can’t touch the ground, it’s dangerous waters down there!”

“It’s like walking the plank on a pirate ship.”

  The children came up with different ways to travel along the bridges.

I am developing my movement skills through practice and energetic play.

“You have to keep your arms out to balance.” 

The creativity didn’t stop there. Some children took some guttering and planks to make up some new games. They rolled small logs down to try and hit a target.

“If you roll and hit the stone you score 100 points!”

P1d Class Pets

On Monday 3rd September Primary 1d received a very exciting letter from the local pet shop. The owner had heard all about their new topic ‘Under the Sea’ and the children have been given the responsibility of taking care of two goldfish!

“We have to give them proper names!” Hollie

After some discussion we decided children should vote on their favourite names to make it fair. We came up with a big list of two names that ‘go together’. We took inspiration from our library books and films/ TV shows we had like.

The list included;

Peter Pan & Wendy

Jack & Jill

Sebastian & Flounder

El Nombre & Little Juan

Tom & Jerry…

First, we took a ‘hands-up vote’ to narrow down our options to four.

The children have been learning about Data Handling in numeracy and thought an easy way to see our results would be on a pictograph.

I can collect objects and ask questions to gather information, organising and displaying my findings in different ways. MNU 0-20a

Until the last fish was in place…

The results were clear for all to see. We would like to formally introduce you to… El Nombre & Little Juan 🙂

We have taken lots of time to come up with some rules and ways in which we can show respect towards out new class pets. We have set up a rota to give everyone a shot at taking responsibility for caring, feeding and cleaning out the fish tank!

We hope to learn lots about the world under the sea and how our actions affect the creatures who live there.

Busy Bees

We have had a very busy start to Primary one and can’t wait to share our learning journeys as we progress through school.

Each day is a new challenge and the boys and girls have quickly settled into the routine of school.

Primary one started off by having conversations with their teachers about what they would like to learn about in Primary one. They came up with some fantastic ideas! Ask your child about the topic their class has chosen to focus on for the first term. The children will have regular opportunities to ‘lead their own learning’ and this is just one of the ways we facilitate this in Primary one.

The children have enjoyed their first few days in our Outdoor Classroom, during Muddy Movers time. This term we are focusing on skills such as, co-operation and teamwork, as well as balancing and movement. Please ensure your child has suitable clothing for these days (waterproofs & wellies) and encourage them to practise changing in and out of these at home.

I am learning to move my body well, exploring how to manage and control it and finding out how to use and share space. HWB 0-21a

Throughout Primary one, children will be encouraged to apply literacy and numeracy skills outdoors and in new contexts.

As I listen and talk in different situations, I am learning to take turns and am  developing my awareness of when to talk and when to listen.
LIT 0-02a / ENG 0-03a

Inside the classroom the children have began learning sounds and numbers. This term in Literacy they are focusing on identifying the initial sound of words, rhyming, blending sounds together and even some sight words, for when they are ready to read.

I enjoy exploring and playing with the patterns and sounds of language and can use what I learn. LIT 0-01a / LIT 0-11a /LIT 0-20a


“The shaving foam is so much fun, I love drawing my letters in it. If I make a mistake I just quickly rub it out!”

  

In Numeracy, the children are being challenged to count, order and identify numbers to 10 and beyond! Look out for some pictures of the activities they get up to during task time and independent learning.

The boys and girls have had lots of opportunities for independent learning in our open area.

“The teachers have been busy making lots of new areas for us to learn in.”

This term, the children decided they would like a ‘Construction’ space, a ‘Home’ and ‘Dress-Up’ corner, ‘Messy Play’ area and a ‘Natural Art’ space.

We would welcome any donations for the open area. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you think you could help.

We are working on our fine motor skills at ‘Funky Finger’ stations in our classrooms and getting creative in other areas too.
