Outdoor Maths

This afternoon we put on our wellies and off we went to the “spider woods” to have some fun with maths!

First we worked in groups to great sequences and patterns and build 2d shapes with natural resources. We worked with a partner so we had to demonstrate our team work, talking and listening skills too. Have a look at some of our masterpieces…..

Next we moved up the wood and into the forest. We decided that we would work together as a whole class and use our STEAM skills to design and construct a den. It was fantastic watching everyone delegate out roles such as the stick collector, the “sweeper”, the builder to make the process more efficient. Then some of the class had some further design skills to put wooden flooring down inside, a bench for seating and create a “fire” for heat! Great team effort P3a!

A day full of learning

It has been another busy day in the P3a classroom. As usual we started off with maths..the stars are learning about to reverse addition numbers.

The sound we are learning in class this week is the “ph” sound which actually sounds like the letter “f” when you blend the 2 together. We enjoyed thinking of words with the ph sound in them and then we were very focused during our station time.

Look what we created in the play creation zone today too!

After lunch is was time for expressive arts. We are still learning about the artist Paul Klee and we are creating pictures today with tissue paper to create the backgrounds and tomorrow we will be adding pen to the top to create ours faces, have a look tomorrow at our finished masterpieces!!!

French Animal Quiz

We have been learning how to say different types of animals in French so I thought a fun activity would be to work with a partner and take take part in a  french animal quiz. This also tested our team work, listening and talking skills. We all had a great time!

Construction Area

As well as all of our learning that we do within the curriculum, we are still focusing on the play pedagogy in the classroom too. The boys and girls LOVE to spend time in the construction area and this week “cupro blocks” arrived in the construction area and we have loved putting our building skills to use creating many wonderful buildings and structures.

“I started off building the base by making a cuboid because it makes it stronger this way, then I built it up taller by adding a layer each time. I also added a window too” – Skye

“We worked together to build this structure, it got taller and taller, we managed to make it 9 levels tall but we couldn’t go any bigger because we couldn’t reach any higher!!” – Lewis, Ben, Jack and Magnus

“We built a volcano! Ruairi started by putting the thicker blocks on the ground and then Ella started adding to it by adding the longer blocks onto each layer. The red lego is lava coming out of it!” – Ella, Jack and Ruairi

“I worked with Calum to build a hotel. We made a balcony so that you can get air!” – Skye

Another busy day!

What a busy day we have had in P3a!

We started off the day with maths. We are all working really hard learning lots of different maths skills. Have a look at some of the pictures and see what we got up to!

Then we had phonics and we learnt a 4 letter sound today….eigh.

We enjoyed moving around different stations.

This afternoon we carried on learning about Paul Klee and created some new masterpieces of our own involving feathers!

Paul Klee colour theory on book pages

Every Monday afternoon after we have read our reading books, it is time for Expressive Arts and artist we are studying in class at the moment is Paul Klee.

We created our own Paul Klee pictures today linked to one of his art works and they look fantastic. We focused on drawing rectangles and squares free hand with wax crayon and then used water colours to fill in the boxes. Water colours are light paints and therefore allow us to see the words on the book page still.

Maths

This morning we have been working on our maths skills since we arrived at school. After a quick mental maths, we began learning some new maths skills.

Have a look to see what we have been doing…

The stars are working on their number bonds:

The diamonds are learning about the properties of 2d shapes and predicting if they can tile and then tiling with the 2d shapes:

The rubies were working on their measuring and estimating skills and estimating the length of items and then using a ruler to measure how long they actually are in cm:

Fun Friday

What a busy day we have had today!

We started off this morning completing maths tasks: the Rubies were continuing their learning about addition and carrying numbers, the stars were working with Miss Cairnie calculating money and the diamonds were dividing with remainders. We all worked very hard and completed some excellent maths work!

After break we had out first music lesson with Miss Carey. It was a little bit different to normal because she taught us over the computer but we still enjoyed learning about the beat and completing the tasks.

After lunch we then completed some handwriting practise and joining up the letter e. It was tricky but we stayed focused and wrote some lovely words.

To finish off the day we then had science. We are learning about materials and this week we were learning all about gases. We looked at the molecules in a gas and how they are different to the molecules in a solid or a liquid and we learnt lots about gases. Did you know that you can’t always see gases but you can still smell them?! Then we got to make our own pop up toys using syringes, pipes and cups. We had to put gas in one of the syringes to make it work!
