5 Times Table

This morning the primary 3 were learning their 5 times table. We learnt a “catchy” song and we practiced in the classroom. We then took the learning outdoors and with a partner we wrote out the 5 times table on the ground.

Here is the link to practice the song at home:

Independent Learning

When we are in the zones throughout the day, we are constantly putting our learning into effect.

Yesterday, Evie showed off her learning in maths to create “workbooks” for the boys and girls in her group to practice their calculations.

Maya at home created her own characters from Georges Marvelous Medicine and brought them in to share with the class. During time in the open area yesterday, she added to her work at home and created George to go alongside Grandma!

Designing Puppets

Yesterday afternoon we created our own characters from Georges Marvelous Medicine. We choose to create either George or Grandma and used a range of colours and paper folding to make the characters even more eye catching.

Olive then came up with the excellent idea of making the characters into puppets and create our own puppet show to show off the drama skills which we have been learning with Miss Cairnie.

Watch this space for the puppet show……

Right Angle Hunt

This morning the P2’s were learning about right angles and what shapes have right angles in them. After we did our learning, we decided to go on a right angle hunt around the classroom. We quickly realised that right angles are every where in the environment.

Quentin Blake inspired self portraits

Over the last 2 days, we have been learning about Quentin Blake who is the illustrator for George’s Marvelous Medicine.  We were learning about the style of drawing he does and how he creates his characters.

We then had a go at using art pencils to draw our own self portraits in a similar style to Quentin Blake. The results were amazing!

Today we learnt how to use water colours to mimic the colours that Quentin Blake uses in his illustrations. We learnt that you need to make your paint very watery before you start and you can spread it out on your picture by just adding more water to your page.

Have a look at the finished results at meet the teacher tomorrow night!

Alphabetical Order

This morning the children in P3 were learning to order words alphabetically to the 2nd and 3rd letter.

We were tasked with first of all getting ourselves in alphabetical order using the first letter of our name. We quickly realised that we had 2 names that started with E, 3 names that started with L and 3 names that started with M.

So we used our learning to re-order these people using their 2nd and 3rd letters of their names as Luke and Lucas both had a u for their second letter.  Great problem solving and ordering skills Primary 3!

Acrostic Poetry

This afternoon we started our writing block on acrostic poetry. We were learning how to recognise the features of acrostic poems. The p3’s learnt that acrostics have a topic word hidden in the first letter of each line and that we can look for the poem’s theme by reading the first letters vertically.

We then decided to write our own poems about fireworks. We looked at a picture of fireworks first and created a word bank describing the fireworks. Here are just some of P3’s suggestions… (we wrote even more in our jotters!)

Next we wrote the word vertically down the page in capital letters and we got writing! Some excellent ideas for our first attempts at independent writing!

Outdoor Learning

This afternoon we went outdoors to create our own mazes using chalk. We worked with a partner and created a maze. We added difficulty to the mazes by adding in dead ends and obstacles. We then let each other try out our mazes. Before anyone could try out our maze however, we had to tell them the instructions before hand which showed off our talking skills.
