Bible Stories

Dave, the Minister from Newton Mearns Baptist Church will be visiting Primary One over the next few weeks to tell us all about Bible stories. He told us about the old Testament which has 39 books and the New Testament which has 27 books. Did you know the Bible has 773,692 words altogether!

We also found out that the bible has 66 books. It is just like a mini library!

The first bible story we heard was ‘The walls of Jerico’. We found it very interesting and asked lots of questions.

World of Work 🌎

Today we were visited by our guest visitor, Dr Merchant. He is an ophthalmologist who specialises in eye and vision care.

His job is to perform eye exams, diagnose and treat disease, prescribe medication and perform eye surgery.

Dr Merchant showed us a model of an eye. It was very interesting to see the different layers our eye is made of.

He showed us a video of an eye test bring performed.

We were also given the opportunity to take part in a few of the eye tests we were shown in the video.

A huge thank you for visiting us, we enjoyed learning more about the human eye.

World of Work 🌎

A big thank you to Dr Saggar who came in to tell us about her job. Dr Saggar is a psychiatrist. She told us how to become a psychiatrist and what her work involves. Dr Saggar has a very special job because she helps people feel better. Dr Saggar asked Primary 1.1 if there is anybody who would like to become a psychiatrist and there was a great show of hands. Thank you for introducing us to psychiatry.

Dentist Visit

As part of STEM Fortnight, a dentist came to tell us about the importance of brushing our teeth.

First she told us what happens when you visit a dentist:

Next she showed us three important tools to help us keep our teeth clean, fresh and healthy. Those were a toothbrush and toothpaste, mouth wash and floss.

After that we played a game. We were all given a smiley tooth and a sad tooth. The dentist held up a variety of food and drink items and we had to decide whether it was healthy or unhealthy by holding up the 🙂or ☹️ tooth. She was impressed with our knowledge!

Developing the Young Workforce

Yesterday we went to Asda to experience and understand the role of a cashier in a supermarket.

We were successful at:

– being a cashier and following the sequence of the task.

– naming some features of the product’s label and finding the barcode.

– recognising that coins are used as payment and given as change.

– identifying that cashiers use numeracy skills such as addition and subtraction.

– being polite and mannerly.

World of Work 🌎

A big thank you to Mrs Peebles for visiting us in P1.1

Mrs Peebles works as a prosthetist/orthotist. She assesses, designs, makes and fits artificial limbs.

We listened to Mrs Peebles journey on how to become a prosthetist/orthotist. She told us which subjects at school are the most important for this job and the only two places in UK where you can study prosthetist/orthotist, University of Strathclyde and University of Salford.

Mrs Peebles loves her job because she plays such an important part in the lives of  many individuals, to help with their movement. We think it is a very rewarding career.

Thank you for visiting us and allowing us the opportunity to handle artificial limbs.

Highland Spring Lab Technician

Today we were visited by Rachel Crawford, a lab technician who works for Highland Spring. Her job is to collect samples from factories in Glasgow and Perth, test the water and record the results as positive or negative. She showed us how to test the water using pipettes and this was cool.

Rabbit Rescuers

Yesterday the SSPCA delivered two rabbits, Smudge and Fudge to P1.1

We learned how to hold them correctly.

1. You have to place one hand under their chest.

2. Your other hand must support their back legs.

3. You must hold them gently but securely against your chest.

We decided what makes a rabbit happy and sad.

We took a close look at all the things you need to do to look after a rabbit; change their water, give them their morning feed, give them time for a morning play/out in the run, check for anything that looks different in their appearance, give them time for an afternoon play, check their food/water and clean their cage.

We enjoyed learning facts about rabbits.

Electricity

We are learning to stay safe when using electricity.

We learned how wind turbines generate electricity and we made our own windmills.

We went outside to test our windmills and we were delighted when they turned in the wind.

We discovered how to make a simple circuit to light a bulb using a few basic components.
