Happy Purim

On Friday the 10th of March, Calderwood Lodge celebrated the Jewish festival of Purim. Purim commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, who was planning to kill all the Jews. This took place in the ancient Achaemenid Persian Empire. The story is recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther.

During the day we took part in different stations in each classroom. We began in the hall where each class paraded on the stage.

Station A – Quiz

Station B – Drama

Station C – Games in the hall

Station D – Hamantaschen and story telling

Station E – Mask Making

Station F – Mishloach Manot bag decorating

Station G – Dancing with Shosh

Station H – Puzzles and games

We all enjoyed dressing up in our fancy clothes and costumes. Here is what Primary 6 dressed as:

Esther – Doctor

Zipporah – Guitarist

Zidane and Fatimah – Pirates

Ava and Jenna – Mario and Luigi

Daniel – Storm Trooper

Jamie – Ash Ketchum

Ben – Astronaut

Flora – Ice Skater

Zaynah – Wonder Woman

Harrison – Bobba Fet

Faizan – Kylo Ren

Louis – Freddy Fuzz Bear

Sophia – Little Red Riding Hood

Ksenia – Unicorn

T.J – Mad Hatter

Zak – Dalmation

Ellie – Persian Girl

Miss Aslam – Bunch of purple grapes

Our favourite staff costumes were Mr Guetta who was dressed as a girl from Tel Aviv and Miss Aslam and Miss Reid who were dressed as a bunch of grapes.

It was a day full of fun and excitement!

Purim Preparations

As Purim was fast approaching, Primary 6 were chosen to bake Hamantaschen. A hamantash is a triangular shaped, filled-pocket cookie or pastry which is usually associated with the Jewish holiday of Purim which is on Sunday. They are shaped after Haman’s ears. Primary 1 also joined us to help bake. Mrs Rosenberg grouped us so that we were able to support the younger children. She demonstrated how to make a hamantash and then we all got to have a go ourselves. Some were filled with jam and others filled with chocolate chips. We all enjoyed baking and working with the Primary 1 class.

Euro Quiz

On Wednesday the 8th March, a team of five pupils from Primary 6 participated in the East Renfrewshire Euro Quiz Heats. At the Euro Quiz there were 4 rounds. The first round was Geography, the second round was languages; there was a choice of Spanish, German, Italian and French questions.  We answered the French language questions. Round three was all about understanding Europe; this included questions about the European Parliament. The final round was a general knowledge round about sports, history, music, food and culture. We have been preparing for the Euro Quiz for a whole month so we were very proud to have come third place with an outstanding 44 out of 60. Well done to all the other schools who participated!

Our Victorian Classroom

This week we changed our normal classroom to a Victorian classroom! We began by moving our desks in to rows. We made sure that the boys sat at the left side of the desk and the girls on the right. On the black-board we wrote the alphabet in copperplate and we have a clock face to help us with our times tables. We do dictation at the start or end of every day. We have also made our own Dunces hat which is worn by anyone who loses a dojo point. We have written some Victorian classroom rules on the blackboard such as calling the teacher Mam or Sir (if it’s Mr Robson) and standing when an adult enters the room. We are enjoying having our classroom set up like this.

Primary 6 visit Scotland Street Museum

On the 24th of February, Primary 6 visited Scotland Street Museum to see what life would be like in a Victorian classroom. This was part of our Social Studies topic of the Victorians.

When we arrived, the boys and girls were separated and taken to the cloakrooms to change into uniform worn in the Victorian times. We waited anxiously outside the classroom for the Victorian teacher as from what we have learned in our topic, we knew she was going to be extremely strict. The boys had to sit next to a girl (boy on the left and girl on the right).

First we recited a short prayer, followed by some mental arithmetic (this is what they called maths in the Victorian times). We used slates and slate pencils to answer some problem solving questions. They were tricky!

Next we practised copperplate writing using ink. If someone did something wrong, their table was slammed with the belt which was used on pupils during the Victorian times.

Towards the end of the workshop, the teacher came out of role and talked to us about the overall differences between Victorian schools and modern schools. At this point everyone felt much more relaxed!

Jamie was chosen to model the dunces hat, this was hilarious as everyone got to laugh at him. We also took part in a short drill activity (this is what they called PE in the Victorian times).

We all had a wonderful time and will remember this trip for a long time. We have realised how kind the teachers at Calderwood Lodge really are!

Check out some pictures from the trip below.

Badminton taster session

On Thursday the 16th  of February, P3-7 went to Maccabi for a badminton taster session. We travelled by bus. Our coaches (Ian and Ewan) split us into two groups.  The more experienced badminton players played a game called “Jailbreak”. It’s a game where the coach hits the shuttlecock over the net and the person on the other side tries to hit it back. The other group were practising their badminton skills. The session lasted an hour, before we knew it, it was time to get back on the bus to go back to school. It was very fun and we all enjoyed it. We all want to go again.

Gary Jacobs

One Wednesday the 8th of February World Famous Boxer Gary Jacobs came in to talk about his boxing career. Gary Jacobs (The Kid) went against Parnell Whitaker (sweet pea) to be the world’s best boxer. He taught primary 3, 4 and 6 some awesome boxing moves. Six people (two from each class) came on the stage and put some punching gloves on and learnt some moves and punches. Gary Jacobs won the British, Scottish and European boxing title. He has had 48 wins and 5 losses. We got to play some games and have a question and answer session with Gary Jacobs. We asked questions relating to religion, boxing and some personal questions. We all had a great time and learnt lots!

Squash Taster Session

On Tuesday the 31st of January Primary 6 6 began their first squash taster session which was led by an instructor called Stuart. We watched him demonstrate first and then we had a go ourselves. He taught us how to hit the ball using forehand and backhand movements. We also played a game in teams where we had to see how many hits we could do as a team. It was a fun session and we are looking forward to 3 more sessions!

Burns Supper

On Wednesday the 25th of January P6 and P7 and their parents were joined for Burns Supper in the school hall. It was presented by Oliver (P7) & Flora (P6). We were brought in by a man playing bag pipes and we got to sit next to our parents. Oliver and Flora told us some very interesting facts about Robert Burns across the whole supper. First P7 danced the Dashing white Sargent, then P6 danced Strip the Willow, then both classes danced the Gay Gordons. After that we had a taster of haggis, neaps and tatties along with some Irn Bru whilst we were quizzed on how much we had remembered. It was an eventful afternoon and we are glad that all of our hard work paid off in the end! Check our our art work and a picture of us showing off our tartan in the pictures below!
