The End of Term 3 Learning in 1c

Welcome back to Primary 1c’s blog! We can’t wait to show you what we have been learning and exploring in school.

A huge congratulations to Sophie and Ellis for making it through to the finals for Crookfur’s Got Talent. They performed and danced amazingly with so much confidence in front of the whole school. Well done!

ICT

Within ICT we have became confident in being able to log in, use different programmes such as ActivInspire and are now able to access Internet Explorer to access a website.

Now we are learning about Microsoft Word and how to use the different tools within this.

Literacy

In Literacy we continue to expand our knowledge about the properties of non-fiction books. We are able to locate information using the contents page and use the index page.

We are sorting out pictures that rhyme with the heading! We use our knowledge of sounds to determine if it rhymes.

We continue to practice tricky words from our Common Words to ensure we know how to read and spell it correctly.

We are also practising to solve the missing letters within an alphabet!

Within Writing, we have been learning how to write instructions. We know that instructions require numbered steps and openers.

On Monday, we wrote about making a Fruit Salad. Before this, we were using our listening skills as we recorded notes about making a fruit salad that would be used to inform our instructional writing.

‘Silly sentences’ is a fun game within Literacy we love to do! We have to make a sentence using random pictures shown to us. Our sentences show we can punctuate our sentences correctly.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We continue to practice adding and subtracting to 10 mentally!

At the easel, we were trying to beat the timer by completing all the sums on the board! We were able to beat the timer!

We are linking addition and subtraction with Money and are able to complete questions and word problems relating to this.

We are also linking addition and subtraction sums together by making fact families!

Ordering numbers to 100 was too easy! As a challenge we have been practising to order numbers to 1000 – which we can do too!

We are able to recognise different shapes and identify how many corners and edges it has.

We had to explore different shapes and identify its properties.

Learning Experiences across Indoors and Outdoors

In the construction area, we have been so inventive and creative in our creations. We have been building houses relating to our fact families within addition and subtraction and created houses for our animals!

Within the art area, we continue to use our colour wheel chart to help us create different colours by mixing paints together.

Outdoors we are building dens and continue to work as a team by listening to each others ideas.

We are mixing different paints together to create our desired colour.

We built and created a bird feeder to allow birds to each and drink water from P1!

This is the end of Term 3, however after the Easter Holidays we will come back ready and excited to learn more!

Have a great and safe Easter Holiday everyone!

P1a are confident individuals!

Valuing our friends

P1a were delighted to perform our assembly about Friendship to the rest of the school and to our special people who came to see us! We acted out the Rainbow Fish story and spoke about what makes a good friend.  We showed portraits we had drawn of our friends and some children read aloud their writing about a friend. We sang lots of songs but our favourite was ‘Count on Me!’

Literacy

In Literacy we are becoming more confident using known sounds, knowledge of tricky words and clues from the text to read unfamiliar texts. We like it when we can share reading stories with the older boys and girls.

We can search our texts to find information and  answer different types of questions, demonstrating our understanding.

We can sort words into phoneme groups and write sentences using some of the words. We try to remember a capital letter to start and a full stop to end the sentence. We stretch out the words to help us write them.

We also like to choose what we will write about in our Play Jotters.

Maths and Numeracy

We are  learning different words which mean ‘take away’ and sorting calculations.

We continue to practise our number bonds to 10 to know them off by heart and enjoy playing different games together to help reinforce the learning.

P1B Learning Adventures!

In literacy, we continue to explore a variety of texts.

We are then able to sequence a story and draw a picture of our favourite part!

We use our knowledge of single sounds, phonemes and common words every day to help us with our reading and writing. Here we are using our skills to create sentences using flashcards.

We have also been reading fairytale stories! We chose which fairytale we wanted to read, read some of it to our friends and then wrote about our favourite character from the story.

We use our alphabet mats to help us with our writing as well as common word mats.

We continue to build on our ability to segment and blend CVC words!

Here we are sorting out a mixed up sentence from our reading book!

We continue to revise our phonemes every day, here we are searching for ‘qu’ in a story. We used our special highlighter pens to highlight words with this sound and  together we wrote each word we found.

In maths, we continue to build on our number sense every day!

We have been sequencing numbers to 20 and also writing the number names.

We continue to work on number formation as it is important that we write our numbers correctly!

We continue to develop strategies for addition and subtraction, we are getting faster at solving these calculations!

We have also been revising our knowledge of shape, particularly 3D shape.

At the STEM table, we had the chance to create our own 3D shapes. We had a variety of materials in order to do this with real 3D shapes as well to help us.

It was quite tricky to make our shape stay up, but we used our problem solving skills to solve this!

As we have been learning about senses, we decided that we wanted to develop our sense of taste a little further.

We did this by making jam sandwiches!

We had to follow a recipe, ensuring that we followed each instruction in the correct order so that we made our jam sandwiches correctly.

It was lots of fun and our sandwiches were very tasty!

We then had to sequence each step and put them in the correct order, this will help us when we come to write our instructions for making a jam sandwich!

We have also been making senses posters!

We worked in groups to share what we know about our senses and gave examples of all of the things we see, smell, taste, touch and hear every day in school and outside.

Outdoor Learning

We have been so busy in our outdoor area these past few weeks.

In class, we read all about ‘The Stick Man’ so outside we made our very own stick man!

We even designed a front cover for our own stick man story!

We were also using our problem solving skills outdoors as we were working together to use the water pipe to shoot water over the rail!

We had to work together to ensure that we had enough water in the tub, we did this by filling up buckets of any water we could find from puddles and the tuff spot to keep the pump working.

We were also investigating how far or high the water could shoot out!

We also used bricks and chalk to create our own calculations! Here we are creating a ‘find the missing number’ puzzle for others to solve.

Well Done P1B!!

Our Learning Adventures in P1A!

Mathematics and Problem Solving

We are learning to use Problem Solving strategies such as act out the situation and look for a pattern to solve problems in maths.

We also went on a shape hunt looking for 2D shapes around our playground. We took photographs of what we found………………….

We are continuing to explore addition and subtraction looking at sorting calculations by their answer, solving word problems, playing games and using materials.

We have also been learning how to write numbers in words.

We have enjoyed learning about our dates of birth and looking at the order of the months of the year.

We have been using Carrol diagrams to sort and find information.

Science

In Science we have been learning about how to stay safe using electricity. We are able to differentiate between electrical and non-electrical items. We were also able to identify different dangers in pictures. We learned about battery power and how it allows us to use items without the need for wires.

ICT

We have been learning how to log onto a device in ICT with a username and password. We are beginning to open and close a word document. We have just started saving our work so we can open it later to edit it. We are aware that information on the internet is presented in different ways such as text, audio, images and video.

Literacy

In literacy we have been learning how to write a set of instructions for washing your hands. We looked at using words like first, next, and then to explain each step and made a list of what equipment we needed. In reading we are trying to read new words in a variety of different text. We have also been enjoying using our skills to write stories, sentences and words within our play and outdoors.

Music and Drama

In drama and music we have been exploring friendship through the story of The Rainbow Fish. We have also looked at what it means to be a good friend and how important it is to help each other.

World Book Day

We enjoyed taking part in a wide range of activities last week to celebrate world book day. It was great fun visiting P4 who read us stories and we made a super start to the whole school story by setting the scene and inventing two alien characters. We also had a visit from our mystery teacher Mrs Fry who read a story to us.

SSPCA

We took part in a workshop designed by the SSPCA and learned how to care for rabbits . We looked at how to hold rabbits correctly and learned about what they need to stay healthy and how important it is to care for animals correctly.

Here are some other pictures of us exploring and learning…………

P1B Working hard!

Welcome back to our blog! We have been so busy and have lots of exciting new things to share with you about our learning.

Mini Mudder

We had a great time taking part in the mini mudder!

We had so much completing this outdoor challenge and were able to develop our gross motor skills.

Literacy

In literacy, we continue to become more confident in reading words with phonemes. We like to practice reading, writing and drawing pictures to match these words!

We have lots of fun reading, making and writing words.

We challenge ourselves by using this word in a sentence!

We have also been developing our knowledge of fiction and non-fiction texts. Here we are sorting books into fiction and non-fiction!

We have also been retelling stories we have read.

At the easel, we were reading lots of fairy tales. We then wrote about what happened in the story and even chose words to practice spelling that we find tricky to write.

We continue to gain experience of reading lots of books!

Every day, we continue to work on our writing skills. We love writing messages to our friends and our teacher!

We also love reading and sequencing stories together! We read ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and worked together to sequence the pictures from the story and then write about it.

Maths

In maths, we continue to work on our subtraction skills, we do this through a variety of games on our own and with a partner!

We use different strategies to help us such as counting our fingers, using a number line and even counting on in our heads.

Outdoors

After a busy few weeks preparing for our assembly, we had so much fun showing off what we had learned about toys to our families and the whole school!

We celebrated by having lots of fun in the MUGA! We had lots of different resources with us and used them to create our own games.

We were throwing bean bags through hoops!

We practiced our hula hooping skills!

We had a challenge to see who could do it for longer!

We even received a poster from the boys and girls in Primary 4 telling us how much they loved our assembly!

Now that we have finished learning about toys we have moved on to our next topic which is senses!

To start our topic, we went on a senses walk! We went around the playground and thought about what we saw, smelled, touched, heard and what we tasted at lunch.

Then, we explored our senses inside by moving around different stations to help us develop each sense even more!

At this station there were lots of different things for us to smell, some were good but some werent very nice at all! We smelled scented candles, playdough, coffee and vinegar.

We learned to use descriptive language to describe what they smelled like.

Here, we had to use our sight to find the hidden words!

We even had a tasting station where we had the chance to taste some delicious fruit. Instead of writing what we had to eat, we thought about what they tasted of.

Lots of people said that grapes were juicy, apples were crunchy and bananas were slimy!

At this station, we were exploring touch! We had to put our hands in to the box and describe what we could feel. We felt a spiky brush, a soft sponge, cold water and rough stones.

Lastly, we had a station to focus on our hearing. We had different instruments to use and then we described their sound, the drums were very loud!

Great work P1B!

Have a Look at Our Learning in 1c!

Welcome back to our blog! Our blog is going to start off by showing you how much fun we had completing the Muddy Trail with our friends! Although the obstacle course was challenging it was great fun!

Money

In Maths, we are exploring money in more depth. We are practising to make different amounts using coins which we can add together.

We are also revising our addition and subtraction skills through many different practical activities.

Literacy

We are becoming much more confident in being able to blend our sounds together to create words.

We are also practicing our recognition for rhyming words.

We have a writing basket which we are able to explore. We used the information within the basket to write a story about spiders.

As we are coming to an end on our topic about Toys, we wrote a film review about Toy Story. We wrote what our favourite part was and what the book was about.

We can read, write and draw words correctly which have tricky phonemes within it!

Dance

We are having such a great time working with our peers to create dances which contain three or more different dance moves.

We are using our team work skills and communication skills to work together to create different dance routines.

Art

We have been exploring Pointillism! We studied different artists and paintings which captured this skill. As Spring is soon approaching, we create our own interpretation of what Spring looks like to us.

We then created a sign using Pointillism for our new wall display which shows our amazing and artistic work.

Outdoor Learning

We continue to make creative and challenging dens with our peers which requires problem solving skills.

We created a banquet of food for our friends in the tent.

Senses

As we have completed our Topic of Toys, we have began our new topic all about Senses.

To start our new topic, we went on a Field Walk and used our senses to record what we see, hear, feel, smell and taste.

In class, we explored different senses stations. At this station we had to use our sight to find the hidden words and record them on our sheet.

This was a smelling station! There were lovely smells but also horrible smells too. We could smell perfume, vinegar, strawberry and blueberry scented play dough.

At the touching table, we had to use our senses to solve what we could feel within the box. We felt rough pebbles, soft sponges, pine cones and a tub of water!

This table was the tasting table. We had to describe what we could taste. We described the bananas as ‘creamy and slimy’. The apples as ‘crunchy’ and the grapes as ‘soft and squishy’.

Stay tuned to see what appears on our blog next!
