Week beginning 4.3.24

Hello again and welcome to our weekly blog.

This week we have been busy celebrating World Book Day by taking part in lots of different Literacy activities.

We had a wonderful opportunity to read the imaginative stories that we have been working on with another class. It was amazing listening to everyone’s unique take on the Midnight Fair  and how so many different stories were created by looking at the same set of pictures.

We also had to research an author.  We searched Roald Dahl.  We made a list of things we wanted to learn about him and researched this.  We found out that  –

“He was a pilot in World War 2” (Cameron)

“His books have been translated into 63 different languages.” (Harrison) .

“His birthday was the 13th September.” (Scarlett).

“His most popular book is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” (Calum)

“He died at 1990, the same year as his book Esio Trot was released.” (Lilian).

“He was a very good boxer.” (Finlay).

Another busy week – so busy that Mrs McKim forgot to take photos!

Have a great weekend

Week beginning 26.2.24

Good afternoon

This week in P4/5 has been full and busy.

In Science we were investigating separating solids and liquids using a new method called filtering, where the solids were too small to be separated with a sieve. We used filter paper and discovered it worked well with separating sand and soil from water, but not for instant coffee and sugar as they had dissolved in the water.

We took part in a whole class debate “Should the Titanic be raised from the Ocean?” We worked in teams – The Proposers and the Opposers  and turned our class into a debating chamber. Everyone worked hard to put their point across and debate the reasons for the motion. We followed the rules of a debate perfectly.

We had a visit from one of our parents who brought in a Morse Code machine. This was so exciting and we were delighted to have a turn and creating our own message. What a treat! Thank you so much to our lovely parent.

Have a lovely weekend

Week beginning 19.2.24

Hello all,

This week in P4/5 we have been continuing to develop our tennis skills.

“In tennis we were practising different techniques and then played a game of doubles.” (Harrison)

“I am getting better at underhand shots.”( Farouk)

In writing we continued to write our imaginative story based on the fairground. This week we had to create the middle section. We had to think about how to engage and excite the reader by including a conflict

“My story was really fun to write and the conflict brought a little bit of mystery into it”. (Scarlett)

In Social Studies we worked in groups to decide what factors contributed to the demise of the Titanic. We used a “Diamond Nine” to do this. We had a lot of robust discussion about what we felt was the main reason and had to put the nine statements into order.

We also worked in our debating groups  for our Big Debate next week. We have been learning about the structure of a debate and the roles people have and the rules we have to follow.  it should be great fun! Who will wine the debate ?

Have a fabulous weekend

Week beginning 12.2.24

Hello all,

A short but busy week in P4/5.

In Science  we were learning about floating and sinking. We tested different items from our classroom by putting them in water and recorded the data. We then learned about the term buoyancy and used this knowledge to work as a team to design a boat which could hold as many marbles as possible before sinking. We then reviewed our designs to see what worked/didn’t work and how we could adapt our boats to hold more marbles.

We took time some time  to decode our Morse Code messages that we had written to one another last week. Some were very tricky to work out and others were quite funny! We even created our own written code for others to decipher.

In maths we spent some time collecting and analysing data as well as creating our own surveys.

Another wonderful week in P4/5

Week beginning 29.1.24

Good afternoon and welcome to our weekly blog.

Learning in P4/5 this week included Science and Outdoor Learning.

In Science  we carried out an experiment to find out how different solids reacted when added to a liquid (water). We talked about the importance of a fair test to get an accurate result. Some of the solids dissolved, while others stayed the same. We discovered that stirring the mixtures helped some of the solids to dissolve faster e.g. sugar. Hot water was more effective than cold water when it came to dissolving too. We used the scientific terms soluble and insoluble to describe how the solids reacted in water.

“In Science we were learning about what happened when you mixed solids and liquids”.  (Ephraim)

“It was fun in science” (Beau)

In Outdoor Learning we made bird feeders to encourage garden birds to the woodlands. We are hoping that they eat the seed as the weather is quite cold and this will give them a nice food source.

“We were making bird feeders and we hope to see lots of birds visit our woodland” (Achintya).

“We worked in groups to make our bird feeders and placed them in trees outside. We are going to take some time to bird watch and record the birds we see”. (Scarlett)

Week beginning 22/1/24

Good afternoon

Another week complete in P4/5. We have been very busy in all curricular areas.

In Literacy we created fantastic poems about The Titanic and  added various poetic techniques.

“My poem was a timeline about the events about the Titanic”. (Harry).

“I used personification in my poem” (Harrison).

“I used personification – Titanic ran through the waves”.  (Calum)

“I used onomatopoeia in my poem – it helped describe the sounds of the iceberg.” (Achinyta).

In Social Studies we began our  research on  survivors of the Titanic and we are going to present our findings in our groups.

We also created our own  imaginative survivors story and added factual information about the Titanic.  A great way to showcase our learning!

We were also very lucky that a member of our class brought in with them a model of the Titanic. It was wonderful to see it and we were all very excited to have a good look  at it! We were very careful not to damage it. Thank you for bringing it in!

In PE we are continuing to develop our gymnastic skills. This week we attempted several different types of balances. Some were more challenging than others. We had lots of fun attempting them.

Another wonderful week with a wonderful class. have a super weekend!

Week beginning 15.1.24

Good afternoon all

We have had another busy week in P4/5 and have been working very hard.

This term our science focus is on chemical reactions. This week we were learning about reversible and irreversible reactions and thought of some great every day examples. Working in groups, we mixed a variety of solid materials together and then had to try to separate them again. Some were a lot easier to separate than others!

At Woodlands this week we were connecting with nature and looking around our area and taking notes on what our Woodland looked like during the month of January. We are also  tracking the changes in trees and plants throughout the year.  We even found a little bird nest!

We also enjoyed a House Spirit afternoon.  It was fun to work with other children that are in our houses.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Week beginning 8.2.24

Happy New Year and welcome to our first blog of 2024.

Back to school with a BANG!! We have been learning  about poetry and onomatopoeia this week in class. We created our own poems and we are learning how to interpret the meaning of poems.

In PE we are now learning to develop our skills in gymnastics and tennis.

Our Social Studies topic this term is Titanic. One of the things we are learning   about is  life and social class in 1912 Britain and how it differs from society today.  The children have been fully engaged in their learning and we have had some excellent discussions based on equality and fairness.

We also took part in some Titanic themed drama. We have all been given a fictional character from the titanic and we are developing their backstory, personality and their experiences of  on Titanic.  Some of the children are first class, second class, third class or crew. The children have been researching what this would have meant for them on board the ship. This week we used role play to demonstrate our reaction to seeing the ship for the first time.

A super week back.

Week beginning 18.12.23

Hi everyone

What a busy week we have had in P4/5.

We had fun at our Christmas parties. Everyone looked lovely in their party clothes.

We created wonderful recount stories based on a video called the Unexpected Guest.

We also worked extremely hard to create Christmas decorations. It was a challenge but we used a Positive Growth Mindset  as well lots of  determination to complete our task and the results were excellent.  (our sewing skills have also improved greatly).

We also had a visit from Primary 7 who led a lesson to help us design a front cover from our favourite movie .

A wonderful end to a wonderful year.

Lastly, I would like to thank you for your support so far this session.  Your children are exceptional and an absolute joy to teach.

Many thanks

Mrs Mckim

Week beginning 11/12/23

Good afternoon

P4/5 have enjoyed a busy week this week. Our P5 children have been busy preparing our Christmas Carol Service for you to enjoy next week and our P4 children have been working hard on their mini topic ‘Our Oceans’.

We had a lovely visit to the present room today and the children were very excited to buy their gift.

We have started our new Social Studies Topic ‘Titanic’ . We have been learning about the ship and her various sections. The children have also been allocated a family/job and social class. This will help with developing our knowledge of the class system of the time.  The children are excited to create their family backstory as well as finding out where they would have lived on the ship. We plan to do lots of drama activities too.

It was also Christmas Jumper Day. I am sure you will agree that we all look fabulous!

Have a lovely weekend
