Blog 5th December

In numeracy we have been learning about hundreds, tens and units. We have been practising our place value by reading numbers correctly and putting numbers in order. We have also been learning about weight. We have been finding and weighing objects that weigh about 1kg and about 500g.

In literacy we have been learning about the past tense and we have been practising our new sounds ch for k and o__e.

In our Writing we started a new type of writing called recount. We wrote about a fun experience we have had. Mrs Lazonby really enjoyed hearing about all the fun things we have done.

We loved making our Christmas craft for the Christmas Fair, but we will keep it a surprise for today. We used red, green and white paint, to create something very cute and cheeky.

Blog 28th November

We have been learning about subtracting with exchange and also moving onto thinking about Place Value using hundreds, tens and units. Some of us have been looking at fractions and finding halves and quarters.

In French we have been learning the names of some animals. We made some fantastic posters to show the pets we would like to have, using our new french vocabulary. We also revised our numbers in French with various games.

We had lost our paper recycling bin and we were very happy to get a new one so we can keep recycling our paper.

This week we wrote about how to play Riverbank – which is our favourite game in PE.

With Mrs Dougal we have been learning about Capelrig House. It is a Georgian house that is symmetrical.

Blog 17th November

In literacy we have been learning about nouns. We know that people, places and things are all nouns. We were writing about how to make your own scratch art.  We used bossy verbs to make our instructions clear.

In numeracy we have been learning subtraction with exchange. We used tens and units to help us see how borrow a ten and exchange it into units. We are definitely getting the hang of this.

We really enjoyed having our grown ups in to visit us this week. We moved between different stations all about food chains. Our favourites were making the houses for animals and creating a superhero animal.

Blog 14th November

This week in numeracy we have been learning about measuring length. We had lots of fun using old methods to measure like paces and cubits. We then used metre sticks and rulers to estimate and measure different objects in the classroom in metres and centimetres.

In literacy we wrote instructions on how to make a jam sandwich. Although,we all laughed when Mrs Lazonby dropped the jam sandwich on the floor! We remembered to include key features like a title, a list of what is needed, instructions in order and different time openers.

We have been learning about food chains in different habitats this week. We created our own ocean food chains,  remembering to start with a producer and end with and predator. We also looked at the woodland habitat and created food chain pyramids to show which animals are carnivores, omnivores and herbivores.

Blog 7th November

This week in numeracy we have been looking at the ‘language of subtraction’. We can recognise the key words that tell us to subtract and use different strategies to solve the calculation.

As part of our living things topic we looked at food chains. We started by talking about what different animals we know eat. We learnt that food chains are a way of showing how different plants and animals depend on each other for survival. We know that all food chains start with energy from the sun.

For RME we are starting to look at the parables of Jesus. We told the story of the prodigal son together with the help of some very good actors! We talked about the adjectives we could use to describe the different characters in the story.

In literacy we are learning about instructions. We looked at lots of different examples of instructions like games, recipes and diy manuals. This helped us work out what we need to include in our writing for next week.

Blog 31st October

In numeracy we have been practising our place value by subtracting tens and units.  We have also looked at fact families to show how addition links to subtraction.

We have been learning about the difference between living things, things that were once living and things that have never lived. We went outside on a scavenger hunt to find some examples of this in our playground and school grounds. We managed to spot lots of examples of living things including a bird, flies, trees, plants and even a worm! We used the data that we had collected to create bar charts about our findings.

In writing we were describing the Marshmallow monster. He had big yellow eyes, slimy green skin and sharp spiky teeth. He was the biggest fan of marshmallows, and he liked to play with the marshmallows.

In PE we are doing gymnastics and were practising mirroring shapes in partners. We created a sequence of shapes and gave each other feedback on our routines.

Blog 24th October

In Numeracy we have been learning to do addition with carrying. We used tens and units to help us see how we exchange and carry. We looked at the mental maths strategy of adding 9 and we made tarsia puzzles to help us practice the strategy.

In Literacy we were describing characters. We described Percy the park keeper. We had a look inside his shed and used the items inside to help us explain how he behaves.

In Science we starting to learn  about living and non-living things. We made posters that describe the characteristics of living things. We also sorted pictures into living and non-living things.

Blog 9th October

In Numeracy we have learning about capacity. We have been using millilitres and litres and estimating the capacity of containers and whether they hold more or less than a litres. We used rice to measure the capacity of different containers. We have been using a strategy for adding 3 numbers by looking for the numbers that make 10.

In Literacy our spelling sounds this week were ph and ar. We used pasta to make our spelling words. In writing we were creating character descriptions of Vikings. We described their behaviour, what they looked like and what they were wearing.

With Miss Macdonald we imagined we were moving to the moon and we made a shelter out of lego to help us survive.

This afternoon we made a Viking longhouse and long boat out of Kapla. We worked in teams to create some fantastic models.

In Numeracy, this week we have been learning about fractions eg halves and quarters. We have also learned to tell the time with  o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. When telling the time we have used digital time and counted up in minutes and know to count up in 5s to help us tell the time on analogue clocks.

In Literacy, we did our writing about space using our senses and trying to use interesting vocabulary and openers. We also looked at how to punctuate sentences and when to use exclamation marks.

Mrs Lyle came in again this week and we did some singing games and used some new instruments in time to the music as well as learning ‘ta’ and ‘te te’.

With Mrs Dougall we learned about initiative meta-skill and drew ourselves showing initiative.

When learning about Vikings, we made some paper mache helmets with a partner and are waiting for these to dry for next week.
