Blog 31st October

In numeracy we have been practising our place value by subtracting tens and units.  We have also looked at fact families to show how addition links to subtraction.

We have been learning about the difference between living things, things that were once living and things that have never lived. We went outside on a scavenger hunt to find some examples of this in our playground and school grounds. We managed to spot lots of examples of living things including a bird, flies, trees, plants and even a worm! We used the data that we had collected to create bar charts about our findings.

In writing we were describing the Marshmallow monster. He had big yellow eyes, slimy green skin and sharp spiky teeth. He was the biggest fan of marshmallows, and he liked to play with the marshmallows.

In PE we are doing gymnastics and were practising mirroring shapes in partners. We created a sequence of shapes and gave each other feedback on our routines.

In Numeracy we have been learning to do addition with carrying. We used tens and units to help us see how we exchange and carry. We looked at the mental maths strategy of adding 9 and we made tarsia puzzles to help us practice the strategy.

In Literacy we were describing characters. We described Percy the park keeper. We had a look inside his shed and used the items inside to help us explain how he behaves.

In Science we starting to learn  about living and non-living things. We made posters that describe the characteristics of living things. We also sorted pictures into living and non-living things.

In Numeracy we have learning about capacity. We have been using millilitres and litres and estimating the capacity of containers and whether they hold more or less than a litres. We used rice to measure the capacity of different containers. We have been using a strategy for adding 3 numbers by looking for the numbers that make 10.

In Literacy our spelling sounds this week were ph and ar. We used pasta to make our spelling words. In writing we were creating character descriptions of Vikings. We described their behaviour, what they looked like and what they were wearing.

With Miss Macdonald we imagined we were moving to the moon and we made a shelter out of lego to help us survive.

This afternoon we made a Viking longhouse and long boat out of Kapla. We worked in teams to create some fantastic models.

In Numeracy, this week we have been learning about fractions eg halves and quarters. We have also learned to tell the time with  o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. When telling the time we have used digital time and counted up in minutes and know to count up in 5s to help us tell the time on analogue clocks.

In Literacy, we did our writing about space using our senses and trying to use interesting vocabulary and openers. We also looked at how to punctuate sentences and when to use exclamation marks.

Mrs Lyle came in again this week and we did some singing games and used some new instruments in time to the music as well as learning ‘ta’ and ‘te te’.

With Mrs Dougall we learned about initiative meta-skill and drew ourselves showing initiative.

When learning about Vikings, we made some paper mache helmets with a partner and are waiting for these to dry for next week.

Good afternoon everyone, This week in P3a we have learned a lot more about the Vikings. We found out about some of the Viking rulers, what they were known for and where they travelled and then drew ourselves as a Viking ruler. We also learned about the Vikings Gods Loki, Odin and Thor through some catchy songs that we all can’t stop singing! Comparing the Viking’s runes letters to our alphabet, we decoded some words as well as making our names and our own words.

In Numeracy, we have focussed on our number bonds to 20 and also practised more missing number calculations. We’ve learned how to play a new board game which helps us practise our addition to 20. We have started to learn how to exchange tens for hundreds while using the HTU rods and cubes.

In PE we have started learning some ball skills, throwing catching dribbling and kicking with a basketball and football focus.

In Literacy, we described the snowy scene for our setting, with a focus on using adjectives and openers to make our writing more interesting. We also practised our spelling words by using the Viking’s runes letters which was quite tricky!

This week we have enjoyed learning more about the Viking’s culture and daily lives. We used books to complete a research task and answered questions about the food and drinks they ate, the clothes they wore, what their houses were like, and what they did for work and travel. We also created a Viking menu, designed a Viking’s outfit and drew a Viking village.

In Literacy, we have continued practising our new spelling words and reading our books. We also did a writing task, using our senses to describe the setting of a beach. We have also explored different types of nouns and proper nouns and identified these in sentences and used them in our own sentences.

This week in Numeracy we continued our number work and practised counting in tens and adding 10 and multiples of 10 to any number, recognising that only the tens change. With a focus on doubling, we have started to develop more addition and subtraction strategies. Using number lines and 100s squares, we have practised rounding up or down to the nearest 10.

In Literacy, we did some imaginary writing about a picture of a flying house and tried to include adjectives and openers. We continued our dictionary work and have learned how to search for words in the dictionary and put words in alphabetical order.

While learning about the Vikings, we looked at pictures of artifacts and guessed what colour they would be and what they were used for. Last week we thought that their helmets had horns but we now know that this was made up. We also looked at maps and explored the routes that the Vikings took to different countries.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about how to split numbers into tens and units and then practised addition using columns. We have also continued doing missing number calculations and tested ourselves with the Daily 10.

Hello Everyone!

Hello Everyone,  welcome to P3a’s blog! We will be posting updates about all our learning alongside some pictures.

This week we have decided on our topic to learn about the Vikings. We have discussed what we already know and what we would like to know. Then we drew what we think a Viking might look like and included a background with what we think they might eat and where they might live etc.

In Numeracy, we have done a lot of addition and subtraction within and above 20. We have also done a lot of missing number calculations and some games to practise our number work.

In Literacy, we have been practising our spelling sounds and read our new books. We did some ‘All About Me’ writing as well as learning about how to use dictionaries.

With Mrs Dougel, we made dragons and tried to get them to fly. We also learned about the feeling meta-skill and made a kindness tree. We also loved our music lesson with Mrs Lyle where we practised singing and playing music games.

Another important update we wanted to include was that we said our goodbyes to Sylvia, the Head Cook, and wished her good luck and gave her a clap on her way out.

Below are some pictures of our Maths and Literacy activities as well as our Class Charter which we worked together to create:)
