‘N’ is for November and trying NEW things!

Primary 1/1 have been so interested in learning all about Space! We have learned about the planets, the sun, the moon, the stars and rockets. The class have loved exploring these through art, literacy, maths, P.E. and drama.โญ๏ธ๐Ÿš€

Primary 1/1 learned how to use the Green Screen. We used the background of a moon to act out being astronauts who have landed on the moon. The class filmed these independently using the iPad and tripod. See our fantastic videos and pictures below!๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐ŸŒ•๐ŸŽฅ๐ŸŽฌ๐ŸŽญ

We followed instructions to make our own playdoh to make the moon.๐ŸŒ™

Some of our Space display!๐Ÿš€

The class enjoyed making puffy paint to create the rocky texture of the moon. We learned about where the sun gets its light from, the phases of the moon and gravity.๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ’๐ŸŒ“๐ŸŒ”๐ŸŒ•๐ŸŒ–๐ŸŒ—๐ŸŒ˜๐ŸŒ‘

In P.E. we were astronauts on the moon doing star jumps! ๐ŸŒŸ

We were throwing and chasing shooting stars.๐Ÿ’ซ

We hopped across the different planets.๐Ÿช

We practised our moon landings with a jump.๐ŸŒ•

In IT we have practised logging into our Glow accounts to access links on Google Classroom.๐Ÿ–ฅ

In Maths, we have explored some number bonds to 5 using Numicon and counters.๐Ÿงฎ๐Ÿ”ข

We learned all about the festival of Diwali and made our own patterns using shapes.๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ•ฏ

In Literacy, we have been practising our sounds and tricky words a lot. We have worked on our letter formation, making tricky words in different ways and playing our Race to Space sounds game in the tuff tray.๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”ก

For Children in Need, the house captains worked hard to organise activities in the hall. The class loved beat the goalie and the parachute. Well done Primary 7!๐Ÿปโšฝ๏ธ

Primary 7 had written stories about teddy bears and kindly came to our class to read their fantastic work. The class were excellent listeners and enjoyed having Primary 7 in our class.๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿป

ย

Primary 1 were also very lucky when our buddies came to our class to read their Halloween stories. Once they had read these, we got to pick another story from our library to listen to. Thank you Primary 5!๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽƒ

Keep up the super work Primary 1โœจ

Fun outside!

Today we have had lots of fun outside. We have been making sure our number formation is correct by using chalk to write numbers to 10 on the playground. Then we went on an orienteering adventure to find and write each number we found.

After lunch we went to Muddy Movers. There was lots of exploring, bug hunting, making potions, den building and experimenting with balancing.

‘O’ is for October and Outdoors!

Primary 1 are continuing to work so hard in and out of class. (ARTICLE 28)

In Maths we have had a focus on 2D shape. The class enjoyed an activity where shape properties were given to the class and they had to work out which shape it was and make it with loose parts. ๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”บโฌ›๏ธ

From this, the class made their own shapes and described them by their properties to a partner.

On our outdoor day, we went orienteering for 2D shapes around the playground. We had to colour the shape on our page with the pen left at each shape.ย  ๐Ÿ—บโœ๏ธ (ARTICLE 24)

Our buddies were so excited to join us outside for Muddy Movers. They helped us build obstacle courses, jump from the crates and balance. ๐Ÿงฑ๐ŸŒฟ

We are excited for the next time our buddies come to visit!

We went on a mini-beast hunt with Primary 1/2. We started in the big playground and worked all the way up the hill and back down to our playground. On our clipboards we had a list of lots of different mini-beasts and we ticked off each one we found. ๐Ÿ›๐ŸŒ๐Ÿž๐Ÿœ๐Ÿ•ท

In Muddy Movers last week we worked on our team-working, balance and communication skills. The class used words like ‘longer,’ and ‘shorter,’ to communicate the size of plank they needed to cross the river! ๐ŸŒŠ

The team-working skills were fantastic. We helped each other balance along the planks and communicated about the position of the plank to help us balance. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Some of us even had a go hopping and running across the planks!

Well done for all of your hard work Primary 1, I am very proud of you all! ๐ŸŒˆ

September

September has been a busy month!

In Literacy, we have been working very hard to learn our sounds and tricky words.

Primary 1 have been enjoying our outdoor day every Tuesday. We have been focusing on exploring measure outside using natural materials, objects in the playground, items from the classroom and ourselves. We worked well when ordering ourselves into height order in small groups. The class measured themselves back-to-back.

Ordering sticks from smallest to biggest!

Measuring different parts of the body with non-standard units of measurement. We had to make sure that the linking elephants we used were all the same size to measure accurately.

During Maths Week, we explored shapes outdoors. We worked in pairs to spot different shapes in our school environment and ticked the shape each time we found one. We discovered lots of shapes in our playground, the big playground and the Muddy Movers area.

We even spotted shapes on one of our jackets!

In Muddy Movers we have been working on our balance, team-work and risk-assessing skills. We decided the safest way to jump from the crates is when someone is holding these to help us balance.

We have also been finding lots of creatures outside.

A big thank you to all of those who managed to make it to our open afternoon! The class loved sharing their learning and showing off the hard work they have been doing since starting Primary 1.

The class are working well in French and have loved meeting Camembear!

We can say:

  • Bonjour
  • Au revoir
  • Je m’appelle…

The class have also been fantastic at singing our French song ‘Bonjour les Amis.’

For our topic we have focused on different environments. A part of this was discussing how we can look after the planet. The class identified ways of recycling and making sure we pick up any litter. We made fish from old CDs we didn’t need anymore and picked up litter at Muddy Movers.

The class enjoyed experimenting with ice in science and exploring different ways we can melt this. We used our hands, the light and warm water.

The Beginning of Primary 1/1

Primary 1/1 have had a busy start to the year! Everyone is working well at learning the rules and routines in the classroom and are settling in nicely. We take responsibility for our learning by choosing when to complete our targets and taking off our magnets each time we finish a piece of work. ๐ŸŒŸ

This week we started class jobs and everyone is working hard to do the job they have. The class enjoy earning house points for this and other great work they are doing. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

As a class we read ‘The Colour Monster,’ to explore emotions and we now have a well-being check-in that the class can use at any point of each day.๐ŸŒˆ

ย ย ย

In P.E. we have been working on our fitness. The first focus we have is balance and the class have worked well at balancing on different parts of the body and balancing objects like beanbags on themselves.๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

The class have enjoyed our two outdoor days so far. We have been working with Mrs Brown outside for Maths and practising writing numbers in the playground with chalk. We used the big ten frame to count and show amounts and got into groups of different numbers.๐ŸŒฟ

We are enjoying being outside in the afternoon for Muddy Movers. The past two weeks there have been lots of creatures we have discovered and different outdoor equipment like mud kitchen tools and crates. We have continued our practise of balancing when using the crates.

In Maths we have been working with numbers to 10. We have been recognising numbers, writing them using number formation rhymes and counting out amounts.

Here are some activities we have liked:

Over the past two weeks we have learned the sounds s, a, t, i, p and n and have explored these through classroom areas and at targets with Miss Payne. We are having lots of practise with letter formation in different ways around the room and we are enjoying learning the songs and actions for each sound.๐Ÿ”ˆ

We have also been working hard at learning our tricky words. So far, we have learned the words: I, the, he and she. We are working on our word recognition with these and trying to spot them in different areas around the room.

Here are some activities we have enjoyed:

In Art, we learned about the work of Jackson Pollock and discussed some of his pieces of art. We talked about his ways of creating art and tried these for ourselves. Lots of fun and lots of mess!๐Ÿ–Œ๐ŸŽจ

We have started to learn French. The class enjoyed meeting Camembear and saying ‘Bonjour,’ to him. We learned how to say ‘My name is…’ and everyone introduced themselves to Camembear. Well done to everyone for having a go!๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท

In our class we have explored the UNCRC Rights of the Child. The class have picked 3 rights that they think are particularly important for them in school. The class picked:

  • Adults must do what’s best for me.
  • I have the right to be listened to, and taken seriously.
  • I have the right to relax and play.

These will be displayed in the classroom.

Keep up the great work Primary 1, I am very proud at how well you are all settling in!

Useful Information

Welcome to Primary 1/1!

Monday will be our P.E. day. Children can come to school wearing their kit of black leggings or shorts and white/blue polo shirt to save them having to change in school. Please note, jewelleryย must not be worn.

Tuesday is going to be our Learning Outdoors day, starting on Tuesday 23rd August. We will be outside for most of the day. Children can come to school wearing comfortable trousers, such as leggings or jogging bottoms, with their school polo shirt and school jumper. We kindly ask that children also bring a spare change of clothes and socks in their school bag just in case we have a wet or muddy day. It is helpful to have these items clearly labelled with your child’s name. We would be grateful if you could provide welly boots for your child to keep in school. We have waterproofs that can be worn but if you have your own, you are welcome to send these in to be kept in school. As it is getting colder, please make sure your child has a suitable jacket with them which can be worn under the waterproofs if required.

Onย Fridays we will be learning tricky words. It is helpful for children to bring in a tub for these to be handed out to allow practise at home.

Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a fantastic year in Primary 1!

Miss Payne
