Our Trip to the National Museum of Rural Life

Primary 1 had an excellent trip to the National Museum of Rural Life last week.

Our first stop was the farm. We had an exciting trip on a tractor trailer to take us there.

On the farm we spotted chicken, lamb, piglet, calf, highland cow and horse.

We got to visit the milking shed and had a go of milking a pretend cow. We could see the machinery used to milk cows on the farm.

Our next stop was a trip around the museum. We found out lots of new information and got to explore the garden explorers area.

We learned about the different things used on a farm.

Before lunch we even managed a little trip to the park!

After lunch, we had a Field to Fork workshop where we learned all about where our food comes from. We got to pick animals out of the bag and we were very good at identifying which produce comes from each of the animals on the farm.

We learned about wheat and had a go at using different grinding methods to make flour.

Finally, we made little planters from newspaper and planted some peas to take home.

What a fantastic trip!

French through P.E.

Primary 1 have been so curious about learning more vocabulary in French. This week, we continued to practise our racquet and ball skills and learned the instructions for this in French.

Miss Payne encouraged us to de-code each word by looking at her actions. We were able to guess each word and follow the instruction!

Station 1:

Roll the ball into the goal (roulez le ballon).

Station 2:

Noughts and crosses (jeu de morpion). Throw (lancez) the bean bag.

Station 3:

Feed the animals, roll the ball (roulez le ballon).

Station 4:

Throw the bean bag into the bucket.

Station 5:

Throw the ball as far as you can.

Station 6:

Roll the ball to the target.

Some other instructions we have practised-

  • Écoutez – listen
  • Asseyez-vous – sit down
  • Levez-vous – stand up
  • Silence – quiet
  • Entrez – come in
  • Allez-y

We also practised some classroom instructions and have worked hard to remember these.

The End of Term 2

On World Book Day, Primary 7 came to help us write book reviews for our favourite books we had brought in.

We were very lucky to also have Primary 6 visit us to read us our favourite books.

We had a ‘Where’s Wally?’ Scavenger Hunt, it was great fun!

We had some lovely visitors who wanted to hear The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.

In Maths, we have been learning to sort by different criteria. We sorted by size, object, colour and shape properties. We used Carroll Diagrams.

We have also gathered data using tally marks and presented our findings in a pictogram.

In P.E. we have been learning racket and ball skills.

We were very lucky to have some Mandarin input this month, Primary 1/1 absolutely loved this!

P6 have been helping us look at circuits. We looked at simple circuits, different components, how to put them together and also an online version of building circuits. Some of the P6s created their own matching card games  for us to play on the big screen! Great fun!

February Fun

February has been full of fun!

Primary 1 have finished a block of gymnastics in P.E. We focused on balance, jumping, travelling, different rolls and climbing.

In Maths we have been working on o’clock times using analogue and digital clocks.

Sharing equally has also been one of our focuses this term.

We have had some keen Kapla builders in the construction area, well done!

Primary 1 had a surprise visitor to the class, it was Goldilocks! We made ‘Wanted’ posters and used adjectives to describe Goldilocks’ personality and appearance. We also sequenced instructions on how to make porridge, made porridge and then wrote our own instructions.

Making a Fairy Garden at Muddy Movers!

4 weeks ago we conducted an experiment about bacteria before and after washing our hands before we start our food health unit. One child washed their hands thoroughly and another did not. The class have been so interested in checking the bread and could not believe the difference in the two pieces!

Making our Tricky Words!

Primary 1 were very lucky to have Barrhead Fire Station to visit. We learned all about different parts of their job, different uniforms and got to have a shot of the hose!

Super work Primary 1/1!

Happy New Year!

What a super start to 2023 we have had. Primary 1/1 have come back to school ready and excited to learn.

In P.E. we have started our block of gymnastics. We have been working on the following skills:

  • Balancing.
  • Travelling.
  • Jumping and landing.
  • Rolls.

For our first topic this term we are learning all about People Who Help Us in Barrhead. We have spoken about what community means and discussed different people in our community that help us.

From this we interviewed Mr Cummings, our Janitor, and PC Lorraine our campus cop. We are looking forward to discovering more about people’s jobs in Barrhead.

In Maths we have been working on adding and time.

In Literacy we have been working hard to learn consonant blends and tricky words.

We have been doing some alphabet work and trying to order the alphabet independently.

We have been learning colours in French with Camembear and through the stories The Colour Monster (La couleur des emotions) and The Colours of Elmer (Les couleurs d’Elmer).

Last week we learned all about Chinese New Year and different traditions. We enjoyed using the Chinese writing scroll to write numbers to 10 in Chinese.

In Science we have learned about our senses and are continuing to explore these in the classroom. We put on blindfolds and felt the sandpaper numbers to try to guess what they were!

The End of Term 1

We had some sneaky visitors in our classroom. The class were excellent detectives and found some crumbs scattered around the classroom. They wrote some super stories about what they thought the Gingerbread people were doing in our classroom.

Primary 1 and 2 had great fun at our Christmas party. We had a special visit from Santa who brought us each a present. We are so lucky!

We hope you enjoyed our lovely snow pictures!

We worked hard to learn the days of the week in French. We used the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar – ‘La chenille qui fait des trous’ to help us with the words. The pictures from the story helped us read each day of the week name.

Last week we got a message from Santa to say his sleigh had broken down. We worked hard in groups to design, present and create our new sleighs that had to have a seat for Santa’s helper and room for presents. Well done Primary 1, your designs were great!

Primary 6 came down to read us their stories about Chicken Licken. We were excellent listeners for their fantastic stories.

Last of all, a BIG Merry Christmas from Primary 1/1!

Thank you for all of your hard work in your first ever term of school. You are all superstars. I hope you all have a magical Christmas and enjoy a well-deserved break over the holidays!

Nativity

Well done to all of Primary 1 and 2 for a fantastic Nativity performance last week. Thank you to all of our adults who could come to watch! Here are some pictures of us all in our costumes.

I am very proud of you all!

Miss Payne

‘N’ is for November and trying NEW things!

Primary 1/1 have been so interested in learning all about Space! We have learned about the planets, the sun, the moon, the stars and rockets. The class have loved exploring these through art, literacy, maths, P.E. and drama.⭐️🚀

Primary 1/1 learned how to use the Green Screen. We used the background of a moon to act out being astronauts who have landed on the moon. The class filmed these independently using the iPad and tripod. See our fantastic videos and pictures below!👩🏼‍🚀👨🏼‍🚀🚀🌕🎥🎬🎭

We followed instructions to make our own playdoh to make the moon.🌙

Some of our Space display!🚀

The class enjoyed making puffy paint to create the rocky texture of the moon. We learned about where the sun gets its light from, the phases of the moon and gravity.🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑

In P.E. we were astronauts on the moon doing star jumps! 🌟

We were throwing and chasing shooting stars.💫

We hopped across the different planets.🪐

We practised our moon landings with a jump.🌕

In IT we have practised logging into our Glow accounts to access links on Google Classroom.🖥

In Maths, we have explored some number bonds to 5 using Numicon and counters.🧮🔢

We learned all about the festival of Diwali and made our own patterns using shapes.🌈🕯

In Literacy, we have been practising our sounds and tricky words a lot. We have worked on our letter formation, making tricky words in different ways and playing our Race to Space sounds game in the tuff tray.📝🔡

For Children in Need, the house captains worked hard to organise activities in the hall. The class loved beat the goalie and the parachute. Well done Primary 7!🐻⚽️

Primary 7 had written stories about teddy bears and kindly came to our class to read their fantastic work. The class were excellent listeners and enjoyed having Primary 7 in our class.📖🐻

Primary 1 were also very lucky when our buddies came to our class to read their Halloween stories. Once they had read these, we got to pick another story from our library to listen to. Thank you Primary 5!📖🎃

Keep up the super work Primary 1✨

‘O’ is for October and Outdoors!

Primary 1 are continuing to work so hard in and out of class. (ARTICLE 28)

In Maths we have had a focus on 2D shape. The class enjoyed an activity where shape properties were given to the class and they had to work out which shape it was and make it with loose parts. 🔵🔺⬛️

From this, the class made their own shapes and described them by their properties to a partner.

On our outdoor day, we went orienteering for 2D shapes around the playground. We had to colour the shape on our page with the pen left at each shape.  🗺✏️ (ARTICLE 24)

Our buddies were so excited to join us outside for Muddy Movers. They helped us build obstacle courses, jump from the crates and balance. 🧱🌿

We are excited for the next time our buddies come to visit!

We went on a mini-beast hunt with Primary 1/2. We started in the big playground and worked all the way up the hill and back down to our playground. On our clipboards we had a list of lots of different mini-beasts and we ticked off each one we found. 🐛🐌🐞🐜🕷

In Muddy Movers last week we worked on our team-working, balance and communication skills. The class used words like ‘longer,’ and ‘shorter,’ to communicate the size of plank they needed to cross the river! 🌊

The team-working skills were fantastic. We helped each other balance along the planks and communicated about the position of the plank to help us balance. 🗣👣

Some of us even had a go hopping and running across the planks!

Well done for all of your hard work Primary 1, I am very proud of you all! 🌈

Miss Payne🥰

September

September has been a busy month!

In Literacy, we have been working very hard to learn our sounds and tricky words.

Primary 1 have been enjoying our outdoor day every Tuesday. We have been focusing on exploring measure outside using natural materials, objects in the playground, items from the classroom and ourselves. We worked well when ordering ourselves into height order in small groups. The class measured themselves back-to-back.

Ordering sticks from smallest to biggest!

Measuring different parts of the body with non-standard units of measurement. We had to make sure that the linking elephants we used were all the same size to measure accurately.

During Maths Week, we explored shapes outdoors. We worked in pairs to spot different shapes in our school environment and ticked the shape each time we found one. We discovered lots of shapes in our playground, the big playground and the Muddy Movers area.

We even spotted shapes on one of our jackets!

In Muddy Movers we have been working on our balance, team-work and risk-assessing skills. We decided the safest way to jump from the crates is when someone is holding these to help us balance.

We have also been finding lots of creatures outside.

A big thank you to all of those who managed to make it to our open afternoon! The class loved sharing their learning and showing off the hard work they have been doing since starting Primary 1.

The class are working well in French and have loved meeting Camembear!

We can say:

  • Bonjour
  • Au revoir
  • Je m’appelle…

The class have also been fantastic at singing our French song ‘Bonjour les Amis.’

For our topic we have focused on different environments. A part of this was discussing how we can look after the planet. The class identified ways of recycling and making sure we pick up any litter. We made fish from old CDs we didn’t need anymore and picked up litter at Muddy Movers.

The class enjoyed experimenting with ice in science and exploring different ways we can melt this. We used our hands, the light and warm water.
