ATTENTION S2 GIRLS!

Young WEIR-WISE:  Discovering Engineering with S2 Girls

29-30 January 2018

Building on the success of our ‘Engineering the Future for Girls’ summer school, which has been delivered over the past two years, we are delighted to announce the introduction of a new programme for S2 girls which will launch in January 2018. Through participation in team-based challenges, Young WEIR-WISE is designed to open young female students’ eyes to the excitement of a career in engineering, and consequently, to encourage them not to give up physical sciences at National 5.

The Young WEIR-WISE: Discovering Engineering with S2 Girls programme is being delivered in collaboration with the Weir Group – one of Scotland’s oldest and best-known global engineering companies, with a current workforce of 14,000. The attached leaflet provides further information on the 2-day programme and we ask that you bring this to the attention of S2 girls, particularly encouraging those that have a talent for mathematics or physical sciences.

The programme is fully-funded by the Weir Group and student costs, including a contribution towards travel costs, will be covered. The programme is non-residential and therefore pupils should be able to make their way each day to the University of Strathclyde Campus in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. Teachers are not required to accompany pupils.  For the pupils’ convenience, we will arrange for Mentors to accompany pupils from and to Queen Street train station, Glasgow Central train station and Buchanan Bus Station at the start and end of each day.

Pupils should apply at https://www.strath.ac.uk/engineering/outreach/weir-wise/ using the online application form. The deadline for applications is 1 October 2017. A confirmation email will be sent upon receipt of application. The selection panel will meet early in November to review the applications received and all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by 10 November 2017. An automated email is sent to teachers informing them of the application submitted and requesting a supporting statement. The supporting statement for each student should be submitted online using a designated link by 15 October 2017, for the application to be considered.

If you would like any further information on the programme, please contact us by email at: eng-weir-wise@strath.ac.uk
