BAE Systems Virtual Work Experience

The BAE Systems Naval Ships team are delighted to announce three new Virtual Work Experience programmes for this term.

This programme is accredited by the Engineering Development Trust and on successful completion students will be awarded a Silver Industrial Cadet Accreditation

These events are open to 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year students and take place on

  • 13th to 17th September
  • 25th to 29th October
  • 15th to 19th November

To register students or teachers can visit the BAE Systems Careers Website here and select Maritime Naval Ships. We will confirm the student’s place, subject to availability and forward all the joining information.  All participants will need access to a laptop or tablet to join the live sessions.

Who are we?

The BAE Systems Naval Ships team design and build a full range of naval ships from offshore patrol vessels through to giant aircraft carriers

You may have seen our current ship, the Type 26 Combat Ship, outside on the hard stand in our Govan yard. We built this ship in two halves and steered them together in May 2021 – watch the video here, I hope they fit!

What can students expect?

On this one week programme students will develop their skills and experience through virtual live sessions and online activities devised and delivered by our apprentices and engineers. From combat systems to environmental engineers, project managers and steelworkers students will learn with experts in their fields, illustrating the impact they are making on the future of ship design and the wide range of career pathways open to students when they leave school.  Students will work on an individual project and spend time with our early careers experts who will help them explore their strengths as well as school leaver opportunities.

How to register?

To register visit the BAE Systems Careers Website here and select Maritime Naval Ships or search for BAE Systems Work Experience in your browser.  We will then confirm the student’s place, subject to availability and forward all the information you need to join. All participants will need access to a laptop or tablet to join the live sessions.

Save the date – Scottish Education Exhibition

I’m excited to let you know about plans to host a free, virtual Scottish Education Exhibition in September for senior phase pupils across Scotland who are considering their pathways to further and higher education.

The event will take place on Thursday 9 September from 10am – 7pm and we hope schools will set aside time on this day for pupils to attend.

The Scottish Education Exhibition is being hosted by 14 Scottish universities, three colleges, SDS and SAAS. It will give senior phase pupils the chance to chat to representatives from each of the institutions, view information and videos, download prospectuses and join live webinars covering subjects including:

  • Alternative routes to higher education
  • Choose and apply
  • Understanding entry requirements
  • Personal statements
  • An introduction to further education
  • Scottish finance
  • Recognising the key influencing role of parents and carers, the event will also feature an information session specifically for this group.

We appreciate that it’s difficult to make decisions about further study when there’s still uncertainty around open days and large-scale events. The Scottish Education Exhibition is being designed with pupils in mind to provide them with everything they need to make the right decisions and their next steps.

Girls’ Education Declaration for Woodfarm

As a Rights Respecting School we are committed to promoting the Rights of others. With the G7 Summit fast approaching, we have been tasked with creating our own Girls’ Education Declaration for Woodfarm.

The short video below explains a little more about this and why it’s so important.

UNICEF will collect these Declarations and share them with the UK Government in order to ensure that the officials working on global education policy and commitments for the G7 will have heard from children and young people in the UK about what is important to them.

The Declaration will look at three key areas:

  • The challenges that girls’ face in accessing education and why it’s important;
  • What we will do in our school to support girls’ education
  • Our calls for G7 leaders to take action on girls’ education
