RNSO Engage
Notes from Scotland is a composing scheme for young people aged 14-18 years living in Scotland. Through the scheme, young composers will develop their composing talent, learn new skills and meet other young musicians and composers. They will spend six months working with an RSNO composition mentor to write a piece of chamber music, which will then be performed by RSNO musicians.
Young people are invited to apply for the scheme by sending us a sample of their recent work, which will be shortlisted by a panel made up of composers, RSNO musicians and RSNO staff. Five successful candidates will be selected to take part in the scheme.
The Scheme
During the course of the scheme the young composers will receive mentoring from a composer associated with the RSNO, who will be there to guide them through the process of writing a piece of chamber music. This will take the form of one to one tuition in person, or online.
They will also have the opportunity to attend RSNO concerts, and occasional workshops and masterclasses throughout the scheme.
Participation in the Notes from Scotland Scheme is free.
The Performance
At the end of the scheme (February 2021), five new pieces will be performed by RSNO musicians in front of an audience at a showcase event. All the pieces will be professionally recorded for you to keep.

The FDF Scotland Lockdown Challenge
Details of the FDF Scotkand Lockdown Challenge:
Food and drink has never felt so important to everyone. The impact that COVID-19 has had on every individual’s way of life has made us all much more aware of the food we eat, where it comes from, who makes it and its effect on our health and wellbeing.
COVID-19 has affected how Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Scotland work and a lot of the work that we planned to do with schools has had to be postponed. So, we thought we would amend one of our schools competitions to allow pupils to take part from home and include their families in the activity.
FDF Scotland has designed a Lockdown Lunch Challenge to help young people, parents and their educators and carers better understand what our industry is all about, including; where our food ingredients come from, how they are produced and who is involved in making them. The Challenge will also help young people understand the skills needed to help them into a great career in food and drink.
The FDF Scotland Lockdown Challenge is a fun challenge for young people (of any age), parents, carers and educators to take part in and an opportunity to encourage a better understanding of:
- The food chain from field to fork and sea to plate
- Where food comes from
- Supporting educated food choices
- How food is made
How to get involved!
Can your child design an innovative STREET FOOD DISH that they would LOVE to eat during lockdown?
You might want to base this on the products that you have in your cupboards and fridge during lockdown.
We are setting a few criteria for you to bear in mind and your product MUST!
• Use at least one item of local Scottish produce
• Contribute to one of your 5 a day
• Appeal to children developing the products and their fellow pupils or family members
More information about the Challenge can be found here and here. Please complete the attached recipe grid, detailing your instructions and recipes, remember to include accurate measurements of ingredients.
When you have developed and tested your recipe, please send your ideas to skills@fdfscotland.org.uk before Friday 11th June.
A team from FDF Scotland will select a winner or winners from the entries and £20 Amazon vouchers will be awarded to the best entries.
Good luck!
Scrub bags for NHS and Care Homes
The Food and Textile department have joined a national group of nearly 1000 volunteer home sewers who are making scrubs and scrub bags and delivering them to healthcare workers across Scotland. Our department are currently making scrub bags in their spare time. These are used for putting used scrubs in prior to washing to reduce the risk of contamination. The bags are being made using donated fabric and duvet covers. Our first batch of bags have been delivered to staff at Neilston Medical Practice. Well done!

Medic Mentor Covid-19 Vision
Medic Mentor COVID-19 vision, in partnership with the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund, aims to fundraise and support struggling doctors during the pandemic. The fund has been designed to support our front line doctors who are experiencing physical, psychological and financial difficulties because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Medic Mentor aims to raise at least £10,000 to do this. The Royal Medical Benevolent Fund has set up an urgent appeal to help thousands of doctors bravely standing between the virus and our vulnerable people in society, which Medic Mentor are supporting to actively campaign and fundraise as much as possible. With your help, they can really make a difference to NHS doctors and their families. They can help prevent doctors under pressure leaving the profession for good, help doctors suffering with COVID-19 get back to work and continue their vital work and help alleviate further external pressures on the NHS. Online learning for pupils (including new codes for senior classes)
Online learning for all pupils can be accessed through Google Classrooms on Glow. Please see information below:
All Williamwood young people have access to learning materials at home via GLOW, through their glow username and password.
https://glow.rmunify.com/
Every department has Google Classroom or Microsoft team resources. In these online spaces there are notes, PowerPoints, websites, past papers and revision materials for classes. We are endeavouring at this point in time to add as much information as possible to these excellent online resources. Young people should make full use of them. A guide to support pupils to log on can be viewed here. Google Classroom codes for subject areas can be accessed here. This includes the new Goggle Classroom codes for new senior classes, which are in red.
GLOW user names and passwords can only be supplied to pupils.
Our school website also has lots of information and teaching materials under the departmental tabs. https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/er/Williamwood/departments/
Any pupil having trouble accessing their Google Classroom accounts should contact the school office by email. Someone will call you back to talk you through the set up process.
Many young people in senior classes (S4-S6) make use of the excellent online scholar resources for selected subjects.
