P3b’s Blog.

Social Subjects

Primary 3 have begun learning about Egyptians. We are very excited about this topic. We have already explored the River Nile and have discussed what we already know about Egyptians and what we would like to find out.

“I know that Egyptians mummified people when they died. I would like to know why they used pictures instead of writing.” Daisy

“I know about the River Nile and Pyramids. I would like to know about the houses they live in.” Ruaridh

We carried out a Pyramid quiz and challenge and then made Pyramids of our own. We are looking forward to our trip to the Burrell Collection so we can learn more.

Physical Education

We have started learning about Tennis. We are familiarising ourselves with the ball and racquet by working in pairs and groups and playing a variety of games.

Science

Our new Science topic is ‘The body’. We have started looking at the skeleton. We have learned that the skeleton is a structure made of bones and we are finding out all the names for these bones.

Bridges

Primary 3 enjoyed making cardboard bridges as part of our River Clyde topic. We looked at the different bridges that cross the River Clyde (Beam, Suspension, Arch) and in pairs we designed and built our own bridge ensuring that it could hold 2 toy cars.  We also had to make sure that it was strong and stable and was 15-30cm long.

“I made my bridge strong and stable by putting pillars under it. I wrapped black cardboard round to make short and strong pillars.” Kirsten

“I made it strong and stable because I put 3 pillars under the bridge.” Hamzah

“I used triangles to make my bridge strong.” Erin

Music

In music we have been have been using our voices, musical instruments and clapping to discover and enjoy playing with sound and rhythm.

“Our music teacher told songs and we had to follow the rhythm on a glockenspiel.” Zara

RME

In RME we have been learning about world religions.

“We found out that in some religions they believe there is only one God and in other religions they believe there are lots of Gods.” Kyle

“We listened to stories to learn things.” Mairi

“In every religion their God says you are meant to have a very good life.” Ellis

Dream Big Day

Wednesday the 25th March 2015 was a whole school ‘Dream Big Day!’ in which the children dressed up as the people they wanted to be when they grow up. We had architects, fashion designer, footballers, teachers, actor, doctor, scientists, pilot, vets, journalist, writer, soldier, rock star, explorer, cheer leader, banker and a pop star. It was great fun!

February’s Blog

In Expressive Arts, we have been listening to different types of Music such as happy, sad and scary. We then chose colours inspired by the Music to draw pictures to express our reaction to these emotional tunes.

In Science, through observation and exploration, we know that there are different types of energy in our everyday life. Kinetic energy is known as movement energy and there is energy even in the food that we eat, called Chemical energy. We can also burn off energy by doing exercise, which we did by playing basketball this morning.

As part of our exploration of the local landscape that surrounds us, we have commenced our learning journey into the River Clyde. We are using a variety of sources such as video clips, websites and books to gather information, which will be used to create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation in I.C.T. We cannot wait to design it using different fonts, colours, movement and images!

January 2015

As part of our ‘Financial Education’ topic, we have been researching about Charities in ICT, in particular Barnardo’s, Food4Africa and the SSPCA. We have been visited by these charities and are joining forces with P3a to raise funds for children who are less fortunate than us. Barnardo’s helped us understand more about children’s rights and we realise now that lots of children don’t even have the simple right to clean water or somewhere safe to sleep. We chose to give a little money to animals as well because we love them! We have been making money boxes, designing logos and creating posters for our whole school fundraising event. We are also trying to raise money ourselves using our own fundraising ideas. Wish us success!

In RME we have been learning about ‘Welcoming a baby in Islam’. We chose roles in a pretend family from Grandfather, Grandmother, father, mother, brother and sister. We then chose Arabic names, jobs that we wanted to have and wrote about our feelings for this new arrival in our family.

Another subject that we have all enjoyed is learning the different shapes in gymnastics such as tuck, straddle, L, T, Y and pike. We have been practising free fall independently on a crash mat, using a spring board and trampolines.

P3B – Local Area

Welcome to Primary 3b’s first class blog.  We have been investigating our local area ‘Giffnock’ to identify the key features such as roads, shops, parks, library, recycling, transport, post office and other buildings.  We planned a route on a map and we visited the area and gathered information using questionnaires.  The questionnaires revealed some interesting facts such as the vast number of cars and buses that go by on Fenwick Road in ten minutes.  Another questionnaire found that the public would like to see a ladies dress shop and a fish and chip shop in Giffnock.  Another group enjoyed interviewing the shop keepers.

We have also been discussing the shops within the local community and can highlight the differences between goods and services.  We are looking forward to finding out more about the history of Giffnock and we will update you in our next Blog.

We have been learning about the Human Body.

Your voice box and your tongue help you talk.
Your lungs help you to breathe.
Your heart beats and sends your blood around your body.
Your liver protects you from poisons.
Your skin protects your body from the sun and when you hurt yourself it stops your insides getting hurt.

We made our own body parts!
