All over Britain, children are beginning the new school term. It is good to give ourselves a fresh start as we begin the year. The future is ahead of us and how we are going to use it is up to us. We need to say ‘Let me be new, let there be freshness in my life, let me be happy, let my work sparkle’.

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of The Epiphany when we recall the visit of the Wise Men to the stable in Bethlehem. Epiphany means showing. As a group, the Wise Men represented the whole of humanity and this showing revealed Jesus as the saviour of all humanity.
Each of the gifts tells us something about this new born baby. The gold reminds us that he is a king but not of this world. Frankincense was used in offerings to God and shows us that Jesus was indeed God. The gift of myrrh predicts the death and suffering of Jesus to save us from our sins. Jesus is shown to us to believe in him; to accept him as our God, our King and our Saviour.
In this way as in all aspects of our life, God calls us to live a life following him. As well as our own intentions, we pray for those who are called to respond to the ‘showing’ of Christ through the priesthood and religious life.
