What is Read, Write, Count?

Read, Write, Count is a new campaign to support parents of children in primaries 1 to 3 who want to take a more active role in their children’s learning.

Read, Write, Count’s website gives lots of simple ideas for working fun reading, writing and counting activities into your daily life. These are things you can do while shopping, on the way to school, at bedtime or mealtimes. You can have fun and help your child get the best start in life!

Read, Write, Count also gifts free bags of books, counting games and writing materials to all children in P2 and 3. Writing and counting materials were added to the  Bookbug Primary 1 Family Bag.

Why are parents important?

Parents are the first, and most vital, teacher any child has. While schools in Scotland give children a great education, learning doesn’t start and stop at the school gates.

Doing fun things with your children is one of the great things about being a parent. It makes you and your children happy and helps build stronger bonds.

You can make a huge difference. Research shows that children do better at school and throughout life when parents take part in their learning.

But it is not always easy to know how to help.

Read, Write, Count bags

Children in P2 and 3 will receive a Read, Write, Count bag in the autumn.

Free bags of carefully chosen books have been given to children from birth to Primary 1 for a number of years with Scottish Book Trust’s Bookbug programme. Since 2015, the Bookbug Primary 1 Family bags have also included writing and counting materials from the Read, Write, Count campaign.
