The S1 and S2 course focuses on the development of reading through the detailed study of appropriate texts, involving pupils in note-taking and the planning and writing of Critical Essays.
Shorter texts are also used to refine Close Reading skills in preparation for Standardised Testing and National Qualification courses.
Imaginative, Personal and Functional writing skills are developed in class and through homework tasks. Underpinning success in this area is the need for technical accuracy.
Pupils are also given opportunities for group discussion and Solo Talk.
Private reading is particularly encouraged as a means of developing confidence and independence of thought.
