S2 Workshop

Our thanks to staff at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum for taking four groups of pupils through a fantastic critical and practical workshop.  Pupils learned about a range of historical artworks and different approaches to talking about and analysing paintings.  The afternoon session was more hands on with pupils exploring various mark making techniques and bringing these together to create an acrylic paint study.  We hope to display these works as part of our upcoming Art & Design Exhibition in March.  Well done to all pupils involved, the paintings look fantastic!

S2 Workshop – Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum

All S2 pupils have been invited to attend a workshop at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum.  Trips will take place over the next two weeks where pupils will be introduced to the work of the Impressionists and The Scottish Colourists first hand.  This is an invaluable opportunity to develop the skills required for critical and practical work required for the new National Qualifications.

All consent forms should be handed into the Art Department as soon as possible.

It might be a messy one – bring an old shirt!

Return of National 5 and Higher Folios

National 5, Higher Art & Design and Higher Photography candidates are required to pay a fee for the return of work.  Any candidate that would like their work returned can hand payment of £8.00 to Mrs Duffy in the Art Department and she will arrange for the return of work.  Prices for return of 3D pieces are given on an individual basis by the SQA once an enquiry has been sent by the school, pupils must indicate if they would like an enquiry placed.

With all the effort, hard work and talent of our pupils we would strongly advise that pupils pay the small fee for the return of their completed work.  Any folios not requested are incinerated and cannot be claimed at a later date.  Please consider this as art folios are often required for college and university applications.  We have many requests from pupils a few years after completion who didn’t request a folio return but are now required to submit a folio of work showing their skillset and ability to complete a project of work.

All folios returned will be displayed in a departmental exhibition at the end of the year, details will be sent to parents when they have been confirmed.

Folio Deadline

A quick reminder that all National 4, 5 and Higher Art & Design Folios are to be completed for Thursday the 2nd of April.  Finishing touches only will be completed during Easter School sessions.  Any pupil still requiring a place for either of the Easter School sessions should see Miss McCarley as soon as possible.

A few days remain, it is important to keep focused and give each task 100%.  The sense of achievement when folios are completed and submitted is well worth the effort and hard work that has  been put into all pieces of work.  Should pupils need any help or further direction they should see their class teacher.

Creative Industries – Exhibition of Design

Miss Howard’s Creative Industries pupils have been hard at work co-ordinating their end of course Design Exhibition.  Work on display will show examples of the fantastic design work that takes place across the school.  We have seen just a few of the pieces that are ready for display and are looking forward to seeing it all pulled together.

Work will be displayed in the school canteen from 5 – 7pm on Monday the 30th of March.  All welcome.

My Place Photography Competition

Congratulations to Ryan Getchell on winning The Scottish Civic Trust ‘My Place’ Photography Competition.  Ryan collected his prize this morning along with fellow pupil Monica Reilly who received a Commended Award for her submission.  Fantastic results from Ms Kelly’s photographers!  St Ninian’s entries were of a fantastic standard, check our twitter account for a sneak preview.

The winning submissions, along with all other entries, will be on display in The Lighthouse, Mitchell Lane, Glasgow.  The exhibition opens to the public tomorrow for six weeks – well worth a visit!
