This issue of the magazine includes celebrations from different countries, that take place around the start of the year and near Spring time. You will also find some songs, recipes and activities in various languages.

The names of the winners of the S1 and S2 competition ‘Write a recipe in French’ are also revealed !

THE MODERN LANGUAGES CULTURAL MAGAZINE IS OUT!

From our wonderful Modern Languages Ambassadors:

Bonjour! ¡Hola! 你好!

This magazine will regularly update you about French, Spanish and Chinese cultures and allow you to read, cook, sing and enjoy cultures from around the world.  This term’s magazine is themed around different festivals!

Any answers to games or quizzes could earn pupils house points – please return your completed activity/activities to one of our Language

Ambassadors for a chance to win house points.

A massive thanks to our language ambassadors who have done an amazing job on collating articles and putting them together!

S6 Arabic Students

We are delighted to confirm that Discovering the Arabic World will start for S6s the week beginning 21st of September 2020. Please put the date in your diaries. You will be able to participate remotely in each lesson – either in school or at home. Lessons will be recorded and posted in Microsoft Teams within the Glow portal. Class materials will also be available to you in MS Teams.

In order to access the live streamed lessons, you will need access to the internet and Chrome.

Just to remind you, the timetable will be as follows:

· Monday 13:15 – 14:05

· Wednesday 13:50 – 14:40

Please note: In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, it is unlikely that the Arabic Language Assistants will be visiting schools throughout term 1. However, we will review this on an ongoing basis in line with Scottish Government advice and local circumstances.

ARABIC EVENT

ARABIC EVENT – TUESDAY 23RD JUNE – SAVE THE DATE

Please see below details on an event focusing on the language and culture of the Arabic-speaking world. YOU DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE TO BE STUDYING ARABIC TO TAKE PART.

This virtual event will take place on Tuesday 23rd June from 13:25 – 15:00.

13:30 An introduction to Arabic language and cultures by Tony Calderbank from the QFI. This will also be an opportunity for students to share their ideas of what the Arabic-speaking world means to them

13:50 A traditional Arab story told by Elias Mattar. Elias is a Palestinian play specialist, story teller drama therapist, performer and founder of the El Bayet Centre for Performing Arts & Drama Therapy. He is a Youth well-being Programme Coordinator specialising in working with unaccompanied young asylum seekers and refugees.

14:10 A session on stereotypes of the Arab world by Hana Mohamed who works for Caabu (The Council for Arab British Understanding). This session will look at the stereotypes of the Arab world by exploring the influence of film and media stories. It will also highlight the value of looking beyond stereotypes and generalisations and explore the need for mutual respect and understanding

14:30 Live performances and discussions by Syrian American hip-hop artist Omar Offendum. Born in Saudi Arabia and now living in Los Angeles, California, Omar is also a designer, poet and peace activist whose work blends Arabic and English words and rhythms. This event will be delivered through a Microsoft teams webcast. This means that none of the pupils will be able to see or interact with one another. You will be able to ask questions via the Q and A function – all questions will be approved by a moderator.

The event will include multiple interactive elements such as Q&A sessions for each speaker and there will be suggested tasks that pupils to complete after the event.
