Primary Music

The aim of our primary music programme is to:

  • give all children a thorough grounding in basic musicianship skills, including reading music, performing and writing rhythms and accurately reading and performing pitched sounds.
  • make music lessons fun and accessible to all children.
  • encourage all children to achieve their musical potential and strive to reach their highest standards of performance.
  • grow excellent all-round musicians by the end of Primary 7.

All musicianship skills taught in our Primary Music Courses are based on Kodaly’s method of teaching music using hand signs and rhythm names.

Funding

Creative Scotland is actively involved in supporting music for young people in Scotland through its Youth Music Initiative (YMI). In East Renfrewshire there are a number of primary music specialists who visit all 24 primary schools delivering and supporting class teachers in the delivery of creative music programmes.  Our Primary Music Service is part funded by Creative Scotland and part by East Renfrewshire Education.
