Writing- Cara

In writing this week, we were writing a diary entry of our experiences in an earthquake. We could write about any character and any setting we chose. This writing piece linked in with our top natural disasters. We looked at lots of diary entries to reference our writing off from. We enjoyed our writing very much and can’t wait to write another fabulous piece!

Topic –Cara

In topic we were learning about the fault lines in the world we drew them out onto a world map, we worked in pairs and used Chromebooks to help us. We also learnt about the ring of fire, the ring of fire is where most volcano eruptions. and earthquakes occur.

Outdoor learning Kai D

On Thursday at lunchtime we went down to the woodlands we made a massive den and nearly everyone in p6 were building it. We got two big chunks of wood for the sides the back had tiers with rocks inside so they wouldn’t fall over. We used mud and leaves for cement we all got so muddy but no one was as muddy as Sam!

We also had lots of fun making different pictures with the fallen leaves. We even made a P6a sign!

Maths

The cool calculators are learning about twenty-four-hour time on hinemand five and they are doing great. The problem solvers are working with miss Folkner she was saying calculation’s writing calculation’s. The number ninjas have been learning fractions with decimals andalso been doing brilliant as well the mathleats have been learning area of a triangle and rectangle.

P.E – Amy

On Tuesday we done fitness with the teacher from east wood Hight school. Everyone loved our session. On Wednesday we done gymnastics. We got out all the equipment and we done circuits. We got out crashmatevolt, springboard and little table things.

Reading books– Amy

The publishers reading book is called  Miss Dippy and her amazing inventions.

The  illustraters  book is called pyramid of doom

We also learned all about road safety for road safety week.

This week the mathletes started doing coordinates and we have been playing  a lot of geo boards and battle ships.

The number ninjas have just finished some decimal work and are moving onto some fractions.

Literacy

This week in literacy every group was doing comprehension we each got a text the Authors an exciting day, and the editors did a text called The Dare. We each completed the practice page and then we completed the own your own page.

Writing

In writing we wrote about bonfire night we had to used dialogue, onomatopoeia, similes and alliteration. For our starter we practiced our punctuation by adding the missing punctuation to the sentences so it was a bunch of trial and error.

Music

In music we did chrome music lab and we got to make our own beats and it’s really fun because we also got to copy real songs like London bridge is falling down, rain rain go away, Mary had a little lamb and thats why it was very fun.

P.E

Indoor –  When we were doing indoor P.E we were doing cart wheels and balances it was very fun and Darcey did a front handspring and we were all clapping it is very hard to do a cartwheel so we split up into groups in experience.

Outdoor – in outdoor P.E we were doing hockey in teams of 4 it was a tournament and it so much fun we went up against each other.

Publishers done a text about a person who was born in a pumpkin we have all really enjoyed literacy this week.

Topic

This week and last week everyone started our new topic natural disasters. We have made art and done a KWL grid (Know, What do you want to learn, Learnt) to share what we know and what you want to learn. At the end of our topic we will fill out the learnt bit. We are all really excited to learn about natural disasters.

Art

In art we have been doing art about natural disaster we have done a tsunami that we got guided how to do step by step. We drew it out and then painted them. Now we are doing volcanoes but we have not finished them.

P.E

With miss estlick in PE we have started gymnastics. On wednesday we done various poses and balances. We then got into partners and make up our own routine after we done that we then shared them with the class. On tuesday we do hockey with the pe specitest ( Miss Concade) we are in the middle of doing a tournament. Everyone is very excited to see who wins.

This week we have had a lot of fun this week we can’t wait to get back to learning next week.

This week we had our very first gymnastics lesson! First we stretched before working in groups of twos and threes to create a range of balances which you can see from the photographs below.

To mark Armistice Day Mr Atkinson delivered a lesson which investigated what the poppy symbolises and why it is importance to reflect and recognise the sacrifices of people from the past. Afterwards we created a field of poppies art display which we stuck to our classroom front door.

We also learnt about the 550th anniversary of the birth of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak. We discussed some of the life lessons he believed in and what they mean.

As part of our IDL topic, natural disasters, we have been learning about the layers of the earth to help us develop an understanding of what fault lines and tectonic plates are. This will help us over the next few weeks when we are researching about how tsunamis and volcanoes form. We also applied our learning by creating our very own diagrams of the structure of the earth.

One of our maths groups this week measured, sketched and then created 3D model nets using kinex.

This week our art lesson focused on applying a range of painting and sketching skills to recreate a tsunami. For this we had to carefully draw the outline of shapes, choose appropriate colours, and then use sizing to create perspective.

Our pupil council representative asked us on Friday what charities we would like the school to be involved in and how we could support them.

Mr Atkinson’s Comment

Congratulations to P6B pupils who were part of the Crookfur Primary badminton team, you all did a fantastic job! It was a pleasure meeting all the parents and guardians this week for parents night. It was a great opportunity to celebrate all the pupils hard work over the last few months. Thank you to the class for helping me and the school by gathering and grouping all the crisps packets together for the recycling scheme, collecting the paper recycling bins and dropping them off in the recycling area of the school!

This week we all wrote an imaginative story about a creepy haunted mansion. Before starting, we shared with our peers some of our vocabulary and ideas that we had discussed at home as part of our talk homework. Afterwards we then created our very own VCOP wall display so that we can use it when writing future pieces.

During our Bounceback lesson we learnt that ‘bad times’ don’t last and that it is important to maintain a Growth Mindset when faced with challenging situations. We then thought of real life examples of when a situation seemed unsolvable and discussed how on reflection it wasn’t as bad as we initially thought. Afterwards we discovered different ways to share positive messages, one example we found was by Frank Sinatra “That’s Life”, which we listened to.

In our French lesson we completed a task which required us to introduce family members in French based on the Simpson family. We also discussed the significance of “mon” and “ma”. Mr Atkinson was joined by Miss Mckendrick, who read out profiles of Barack Obama, Will Smith and other celebrities in French. We then had to translate some of the sentences into English and read them back to our peers.

Finally, this week we finished off our Football skills and techniques lesson series by going out to the MUGA and playing several matches. It was great fun and there were lots of examples of sportsmanship.

Mr Atkinson’s Comment

I am looking forward to seeing parents and guardians next week at parents night! Please can pupils remember to bring in appropriate P.E. kit with them for our P.E. sessions on Monday and Friday. This is particularly important given the unpredictability of Scottish weather. Next week we will be starting gymnastics during our Friday P.E. slot. Following Mrs McGuigan’s email, mental maths homework will be issued through Sumdog. If a pupil cannot access Sumdog please let me know and I will print off the questions.

Science:

  • In science this week we have been learning about rusting. The topic Titanic  has lead us to experimenting about if nails would rust in some liquids. We tested the nails in these liquids: Lime juice, coke, cooking oil, vinegar, salt water. Some of them rusted, some of them didn’t…

Maths:

  • In maths the mathletes have been learning about adding multiplying dividing and subtracting length. The number ninjas have been learning about multiplying decimals by 10 100 1000 and dividing decimals.

Harry Potter:

  • We finished our class novel a couple of weeks ago and are excited to have our own reading books.

P.E:

  • In  indoor PE we have been learning about football. We have been learning about the rules and skills of the game. After we had learned all the rules and skills we got in to real games. In outdoor PE we have been learning about hockey and we have been put into groups to play hockey matches against other teams.
  • This week Miss Estlick took us to the MUGA to play full football matches.

School Disco:

  • On Thursday  24th October 2019 the school had discos (Halloween discos) and lots of people thought it was really fun. It was optional if you wanted to dress up.

DYW:

  • In one of the groups for dyw we have been programming micro bits last week  we made them say are name and show patterns. In the outdoor learning group we have been focusing on how to recycle crisp packets. In life skills we made hummus and soup.

Mrs Fry came into our class on Monday and Wednesday to teach two groups how to apply different strategies involving the four number processes. Mrs Fry will be joining us ever Monday and Wednesday during our maths sessions to teach us more about this area. Mr Atkinson on Tuesdays and Thursdays will be teaching us different topics. This week with Mr Atkinson the two groups have been been learning about how to convert kilograms and grams and how to us these measurements in addition and subtraction calculations. We finished the week with word problem solving questions as an end of topic check up. Next week the group will be moving onto another new area of maths.

Emmy Noether have been working hard on their maths volume topic. First we learnt that 1 cm³ ≡ 1 mL, then we solved questions using the formula LxBxH. Finally, we created our very own 3D shapes using the volumes made up by Mr Atkinson. We also had a measurement of volumes showdown which required us to correctly convert measurements, read the different scales and state the total volume within the jugs.

Isaac Newton have started their new topic on 3D shape properties. This week we identified different 3D shapes and then correctly named them. Also we have been revising our symmetry and ML/L topics that we were working on last term.

This week we also completed our science lessons related to the Titanic IDL topic. A few weeks ago we put non-galvanised nails into different liquids to see whether they rust and how their appearance changes. On Monday we checked to see the results and we noted that all the liquids had created some degree of rusting. Some of liquids evaporated leaving behind salt particles and some of the substances in the cup had discoloured .

We played three football matches in P.E. this week and finished off with a game which involves lining up in a straight line and running across the other side of the hall. If ball touches your feet or legs you had to join the opposition.

In art we completed our Road Safety posters for a competition. Then we all voted anonymously for our favourites.

Mr Atkinson’s Comment

Excellent work this week P6B! You all had some fantastic ideas about what we should learn about in our upcoming Natural Disasters topic. Next week we will learn about Fault lines and the Ring of Fire. We are looking forward to having Mrs Fry join us during our maths sessions! DYW has changed to Friday periods 3 and 4 (between break and lunch), however, we will still have P.E. on a Friday either in the MUGA or gym hall during periods 5 and 6 (after lunch).

Snapshot of P6B’s learning!

We have been very busy with our IDL topic, Titanic, this week! First we compared and contrasted the difference between first, second and third class passengers. We then debated what class of travel we would prefer to be in and used our knowledge to justify our answers. Following this we applied our research skills taught by Miss Bishop to create fact files on famous Titanic passengers. Abi brought into class and shared with us replicas of the the Titanic passenger tickets, music sheets that the band on board the Titanic would have used and advertisement posters. We then finished off our ship designs by painting them and giving them appropriate names. Finally, we were able to test whether our ships were buoyant or not by placing them into a container with water in it.  All of them floated, however, some were more successful that others. We decided to evaluate different designs by discussing the different material used and the importance of counterbalancing weight . We discovered that some ships are designed for different purposes!

In our writing this week we wrote a newspaper article based on either an event that happened in the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone or we could create our very own incident that could have happened within the novel’s timeline. We also discussed the key features of newspaper writing such as the importance of layout and how to grab a readers attention through a short eye-catching Heading/Byline. We all used the laptops and Google Classroom to help write and submit our final copies.

This week we started DYW! All the pupils in the class went to different classrooms to learn about Digital Technologies, Learning for Sustainability, Life Skills and Design and Manufacturing. Mr Atkinson showed us the micro:bit devices which we will be programming and turning into Stepometers.

Mr Atkinson’s Comment

Congratulations to everyone for designing and testing their ships. We had a wide range of vessels including; battleships, yachts, cruise liners and oil tankers. It was great to see pupils applying their prior understanding of buoyancy that we learnt in our science lessons and incorporating them into their planning to ensure their boats float. P.E. will return to its normal scheduled periods (Monday and Friday) next week. For the start of this term the homework texts will be non-fiction based. Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

Snapshot of P6B’s learning!

This week in science we planned our rusting lesson. This will involve testing if non-galvanised nails would rust in different types of liquids. We decided to do this as some of the pupils in the class wanted to learn more about the rusting process and how it has affected the Titanic shipwreck. Over the next few weeks will record the changes of the nails and report back our findings.

In technology we created our initial plans by recording the challenges of making a boat float and hold the weigh of different objects. Afterwards we chose some recyclable resources and used them to draw a boat design. This involved us measuring some of the equipment, drawing them to scale and labeling the diagram.

We have continued to hone our passing, dribbling and shooting skills by competing in mini house challenges. This required us to aim and shoot at a different coloured cones, each representing different points. Afterwards we were given thirty seconds to dribble through gates and at the end total how many times we went through them. Going forward all of us will get a chance to lead our warm-ups. With Mr Brown we have started to develop skills related to hockey.

This week we finished reading our class novel Harry Potter. We have loved listening to the audiobook and reading along with Mr Atkinson. It has encouraged us to closely analyse characterisation, plot and setting. The activities also challenged us to to identify relevant information to support our inferences and evaluations. Some of the class have already borrowed and bought the rest of the Harry Potter series to read at home.

In maths Isaac Newton are continuing with their work on symmetry. Emmy Noether have been developing their understanding of place value by rounding numbers to 10,1000,100000,1000000. The rest of the groups have begun to convert grams into kilograms and vice versa.

Mr Atkinson’s Comment

Well done to everyone for reading the Harry Potter chapters as part of your homework! I have been very impressed with the varied and interesting ship designs, will they all float? Thank you to all the pupils who have assisted me with collecting the paper recycling bins and the Walker Crips packets around the school. Every week members of P6B will be involved with Eco activities to help reduce waste and encourage recycling at Crookfur Primary School.
