This week we were learning to add shadow and light to a picture to make our pictures look 3D.
First, we read a picture book called Snowmen at Night. We looked at the illustrations from the book and saw how the illustrator had created a 3D effect. We could work out where the light source in each picture would be by looking at the snowmen’s shadows.
We created our snowman pictures using chalk pastels or oil pastels. We also added the moon to our picture to act as a light source. We had to check where the light would shine on the snowman and where the snowman’s shadow would be using a ruler. We added highlights using a yellow pastel and blending it into the white. We added shadows by blending in blue and black to create different tones. After we had made our snowmen look 3D, we added their personalities by drawing faces and clothes for them.
