This week we will continue to focus on fact and opinion and how reliable various sources of information are, thinking critically about what we read and hear. Please create two questions about the text for homework, and feel free to continue with fact/opinion or reliability focus!

Maths –

Mental Maths Grid to be completed as normal please with 10 questions per night from Monday to Thursday.

Recently in primary 6 we have been studying microorganisms as part of our focus in science and health and wellbeing. In addition to learning about the various roles played by microorganisms, on Friday we carried out an experiment which proved that they are alive!

To plastic bottles we added warm water, yeast (the microorganism), and sugar. We mixed the components together and then topped the bottle with an empty balloon. After a while, some of the ballons started to fill with (a tiny amount of) air, which was produced by the yeast feeding on the sugar.  This production of gas indicates that the microorganisms are a living organism.

A huge well done to Mr Alex Duff who won two silver medals at his Boys Brigade Athletics event at the weekend. He secured second place in the 200m sprint and long jump, competing against all other Boy Brigade groups in Scotland. Well done Alex!

Welcome to the final week of 2018! Primary 6 have worked so hard in these last few weeks and are very deserving on this approaching break! Please see some notes for the week ahead…

• There will be no homework this week!
• The Parent Council are hosting a movie evening on Tuesday 18th. Please put a note in the diary or contact the office if you would like to secure some tickets.
• The p6 party is set to take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 19th. Please come into school that day wearing your party clothes.
• School will finish at 2.30pm on Friday 21st and will re-open on Monday 7th January.

Recently, as part of looking at sustainability within our Barralay topic, we have been learning about the ever increasing levels of plastic on our earth, and some of the negative effects this is having.

We used group discussion and the iPads to research ways to be more sustainable, especially in relation to reducing plastic. Some suggestions included giving up plastic straws, taking a reusable bag to the shops with us, drinking from a reusable water bottle, and avoiding snacks which are packaged in excessive plastic packaging.

We discovered that very little plastic is actually recycled, so we decided to up-cycle some of our old plastic that we’d found around the house. From this, we were able to make a whole host of new and useful things, such as pencil cases and pencil holders, piggy banks, reusable plastic mugs, decorative plant pots, decorative accessories, and even fun and simple catching and throwing games!

Our Pupil Council are collecting donations all week to pass on to our local food bank. Suggestions of some possible donations include jam and other preserves, UHT milk, any toiletries, any tinned food, tea or coffee. Thank you!
