Edinburgh International Book Festival comes to Barrhead

We were delighted to welcome the award winning author, Berlie Doherty, to our school this week as part of the Edinburgh International Book Festival outreach programme.  She spoke to our S1 pupils about her latest book “The company of ghosts”, a haunting and beautiful ghost story for young people. Our pupils were well prepared with lots of questions and there was an opportunity to get books signed.

A most enjoyable and interesting visit.

S1 – Wild Flower Garden

Thank you to all our first year pupils who braved the elements to help start work on the wild flower garden sponsored by Kew Garden at the old water works site in Barrhead.  The pupils took part in a range of activities including litter picks, cutting up logs, planting Silver Birch trees and clearing weeds from the old sewage tanks. The pupils are working towards achieving their Discovery Level John Muir Award and will make further trips to the site before the end of the session. The pupils were a credit to the school and the local community.

S1 Rapid Response Engineering Project

This week our 1st year students are taking  part in a Institute of Civil Engineering project called Rapid Response.  Students were given a Motivation Talk on Friday of last week, which got students thinking about the effect of a hurricane in Honduras.

S1 classes this week are all based around the aftermath of a hurricane.  Students are taught about the difficulties people face after a hurricane and how engineers can help with fixing roads, water supplies and communications.

On Thursday, 30th May students will complete the Rapid Response project with a Challenge Day.  Students will compete in teams building temporary shelters, purifying water and cycling.

We hope S1 enjoy the Rapid Response Project.

Ski Trip

A short meeting will be held on Tuesday, 30th April to discuss the school ski trip to Pila, Italy in 2014.  Students wishing more details can click here or attend the meeting in the school theatre on Tuesday.

All year groups welcome.
