Burns Supper

Burns SupperThe bestlaid schemes o’ mice an ‘men gang aft agley– but not on this occasion!

Barrhead High celebrated the bards birthday in fine fashion with a senior students Burns Supper at lunchtime on Monday the 25th of January. The supper was hosted in the school canteen which was decorated for the event with the seniors wearing tartan to mark the occasion. The atmosphere was set by the school pipers led by Ms Walker who played the senior students into the canteen as the wind and rain buffeted the quadrangle. The seniors were treated to music played by S6 students: Robbie, Varun and Fraser before Mr Gillespie addressed the Haggis, piped in to the hall by Eilidh Grant in dramatic fashion!

The school canteen served traditional Burns’ fair and the students were joined by more than twenty staff who were guests for the occasion. All who attended thought that the food and entertainment were first rate. The traditional toast to the lassies and the more modern reply for the lassies were delivered by Euan and Olivia who made us all think and laugh. All in all it was a terrific event that showed the strength of our school community and once again demonstrated the depth and range of talent within the school.

I am quite certain that Burns himself would have approved!

S1 Boys Basketball

Well done to the S1 Boys basketball team, who took to the court last night for their very first games in a Barrhead High strip.

The boys were playing away at Williamwood High School against St Ninians and Williamwood.  In the first game, the boys imposed themselves early on, but squandered a number of chances under the basket.  In defence, Jordan and Jac were keeping the St Ninians side quiet.

Into the second half, the boys continued to play well with Sean and Connor converting a few baskets.  St Ninians finished the stronger, winning the game 12-4.

In the second game against Williamwood, the boys started well and by the half-way point the game was tied at 10-10.  In the second half, Connor made a number of lay-ups to keep us in the game, but again Williamwood had too much.  The final score was 21-18 to Williamwood.  All of the boys played a part in both games and have a new found confidence, which they will carry into their next games on the 2nd Feb.

Team Captain: Connor

Man of the Match: Jordan

New School Finance Approved

Picture1Great news just through this evening – the finance for the new school has been approved. Finance Secretary John Swinney gave the go-ahead late this afternoon for 12 new capital investment projects worth £330m including ten schools … but most importantly for us, listing Barrhead High School as one of them.

We have no word as yet of the proposed timescale but he stated that “I am able today to advise local authorities … that they can proceed to contract award with the hub projects under the revised model”.

See this link for the full article .

I will keep pupils, staff and parents fully up-dated as things develop. In the meantime, we are happy to welcome this significant step towards the provision of facilities that the whole Barrhead community has been waiting for and deserve.

Rotary Club Youth Speaks Competition

IMG_2708
Well done to S3 students Ailidh Hamilton, Brogan Meechan and Peter Douglas-Kellie who took part in the annual Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition last week, hosted this year by Mearns Castle High School.

The team delivered an excellent presentation on ‘The Commercialisation of Christmas’ and were runners up in the senior category. Ailidh was the team’s main speaker, while Brogan chaired the presentation and Peter delivered Barrhead High School’s vote of thanks.

Well done to all of them!

halloweenWell done to Andrew and Donna Marie who along with other members of the ERC Early Education & Childcare Vocational Programme helped to raise over £300 Glasgow Caring City Child Poverty Campaign.

The students made and sold a selection of halloween gifts at Glasgow Cardonald College.

Under 14s football

footballteamcoloursLast week the boys travelled to Lenzie Academy to play their 2nd round cup tie, on what was a cold and wet night the boys ran out 1-0 winners.

Goalscorer: Scott slotted the ball home from inside the penalty box after he was set up by Owen who ripped open the oppositions defence with a mazy run which started just inside the oppositions half.

MoM: Scott who accompanied his goal with a solid and industrious shift on the right side of midfield.

All of the boys worked their socks off and were superbly behaved, though special mention must go to Hassan who stepped in last minute to play in goals, and despite not being a goalkeeper, managed to keep a clean sheet.

Well done boys, the third round awaits.

Under-14s Football Team

footballteamcoloursThe scores are in: U14 Football team.

Barrhead HS 1–1 Eastwood HS.

Goal scorer: J Catlow who superbly rounded the keeper when put through one on one.

MoM: E Lithgow

Williamwood HS 2-1 Barrhead HS.

Goal scorer O Wilson from the penalty spot.

MoM: O Wilson.

St Ninian’s HS 9-0 Barrhead HS.

MoM: L McGarry who gave nothing less than 100% the entire game.

Although the results aren’t quite going the way the boys would like; their behaviour, effort and attitude has been brilliant, a real credit thus far.

Thanks

Mr Herd
