School Show

Once again we were treated to a high standard of entertainment by pupils and staff as the S6 raised funds for their yearbook. They performed to a packed and enthusiastic audience which filled the school theatre. Acts ranged from singing to ballet and included star performances from the dinner ladies and the annual cameo appearance by Mr Shankland.

Congratulations to the following pupils who have gained their Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is a tremendous achievement and we are delighted with the commitment and hard work the young people have shown in pursuing this award.

Well done to them all.

Barrhead Careers Convention

Barrhead High are hoping to hold a Careers Convention in March 2013.

We are looking for parents and carers to take part on the night by explaining and discussing their occupation.

You don’t have to be a doctor or a lawyer to be able to take part, we are interested in having a variety of parents with differing occupations who can discuss with students the number of hours they work, the challenges of their job and the aspect they enjoy.  Students would also be interested in any qualifications you needed to obtain before applying for your post and also what career path your occupation has.

If your are interested in joining us on the night then contact Mr McLean via the school office. Thank you.

Barrhead Rotary Youth Speaks competition

Well done to Daniel Cunningham, Richard Barr and Richard Halligan (S6 pupils) who took part in the Barrhead Rotary Youth Speaks competition against other East Renfrewshire schools. The pupils gave speeches on the influence of social media in society. The standard of presentation was very high and the boys received very positive feedback from all of the judges and assembled teaching staff and parents, not to mention our own MP Jim Murphy, on their outstanding performance. They were praised for working extremely well as a team and being very confident speakers. In truth, at least we thought so, they stole the show!

The Rotary Youth Speaks is just one of many inter school and inter authority debates that have taken place and are scheduled to take place involving Barrhead pupils this year. The boys who took part last night have also competed recently in the English Speaking Union debating competition, winning their section and progressing to the second round while two of our S6 pupils will also be taking part in the Donald Dewar Memorial Debate in the near future where they will be discussing the rights and wrongs of inheritance tax! We also have a group of confident third year pupils who have taken part in inter school debates with Mearns Castle High School recently to great acclaim.

If parents wish to find out more about debating at Barrhead High School they should get in touch with the school by email and direct their enquiry to A Laitano or A Beaton in the English Department. If you are out and about in Paisley on Saturday the 20th you may also wish to pop in to the sheriff court where twelve of our S5 and S6 pupils will be lawyers for a day, prosecuting and defending in a real court of law together with real QCs and real judges!

Senior Boys Basketball Win

Barrhead High School’s senior boys’ basketball team got the new season off to a flyer last night with a win against Renfrew High School.

The boys started the game well, taking a 15-19 lead in the first quarter.  In the second quarter Barrhead consolidated their lead with some excellent 3-pointers from Fraser Black and Stewart Booth.  Jon Faulds also contributed with four consecutive lay-ups without reply.

In to the third quarter and Barrhead came into their own, extending their lead to 15 points (43 – 58).  Stewart Booth produced some of the best basketball of the game scoring 14 of Barrhead’s 21 points this quarter alone.

As the game entered the final quarter Renfrew High rallied; they found their purpose and drove at the tiring Barrhead defence bringing their score to within four points of Barrhead.  However, man-of-the-match S Booth, pounced on a defensive error and scored a lay-up; winning a foul throw in the process.  Barrhead High went on to win the game by 58 – 67.

Other star performers included Scott MacCuish and Max Curran for some excellent rebounding at both ends of the court.  Thomas McGaughey was forever making darting runs through the middle of the court stretching the opposition.

Well done to all the boys involved.  Onward and upward!

Congratulations to Daniel Cunningham and Richard Halligan (S6 boys)  who represented the school at the lst round of the English Speaking Unions Annual Schools Debate competition.  The boys performed outstandingly against a very strong and experienced team and were put through to the next round.  The judges were extremely pleased with the high level of debating that took place and we wish them all the best in the next round.
