On Monday, 24th June, most of our S2 students had a school trip to Balmaha, where they climbed Conic Hill.
The weather was lovely, the views were exceptional and the students were a credit to the school! Well done to everyone that managed the climb.

Members of Barrhead High School Book Group recently took part in East Renfrewshire’s Carnegie 2013 quiz which was held in Mearns Castle High School. Pupils from across the authority had read the eight short-listed books and then in teams answered questions. Highlights of the morning included the ‘Dialogue Round’, when teams had to identify conversations from each book, and the ‘Character Round’, which involved librarians parading on the catwalk, dressed up as a character from the books.
Barrhead pupils did very well, with Eilidh Weatherston and Robbie McLaughlin each winning a tagline competition and Aimee Long, Kirsty Robson and Megan Watson being in the team that came overall second.
Well done to all and many thanks to the school librarians for organising and to Mearns Castle for hosting this special event.
Happy reading!
After a short break and the many successes enjoyed by our team this year, the Debating club returns on Wednesdays Lunchtime for Juniors and Thursday after school for Seniors as we start preparation for upcoming debating competitions.
There might also the opportunity to represent Scotland in the English Speaking Union World Schools Competition which will take place in Thailand in 2014 as applications are now open.
If you are interested in debating and public speaking you are welcome to come along to room 35 at the start of lunchtime or Thursday at 3:45.
Thanks
Miss Laitano
Theatre Trip
The Advanced Higher English class recently went to see a performance of Christopher Marlowe’s ‘Doctor Faustus’ at the Citizens Theatre. It was a culmination of the Advanced Higher course and the production was much enjoyed by all. The play, which was written over 400 years ago, looked at age-old themes of evil, power and materialism. Its modern adaptation made it particularly relevant to modern day audiences.
Opinions from our pupils include:
“The play’s themes remain relevant hundreds of years after it was written.”
“The play was able to convey its original message by adapting it to the 21st century.”
“It showed how the consequences of mankind’s quest for power is still relevant today.”
“A live theatre production was far more engaging than watching a film. You should go!”
Barrhead High School’s Parent Council are planning to hold a bike or hike fundraising event on Sunday, 9th June starting from Castle Semple vistor centre, Lochwinnoch.
All Barrhead students (and their families) are welcome to come along and enjoy the day!

Well done to seventeen Barrhead High students who completed their Duke of Edinburgh Award – Practice Expedition at Whitelees Windfarm this week. The weather was abysmal, but the attitude, behaviour and effort of the students was first class! Well done to all involved and here’s hoping the assessed expedition in June 2013 has more favourable weather!!
