Check Schoolbags for Mail!

All pupils should have received an envelope today containing the summary October 2014 Newsletter and a copy of the summary Standards & Quality Report for last session 2013/14. Note that the full version of each of these will be added to the website tomorrow (we hope – there were IT issues today which did not allow us access).

Note that the summary Newsletter has a copy of the Important Dates for the rest of this session. The full Newsletter also contains next session’s holidays.

Also in the envelope is a warning that we may be affected by strike action by UNISON. This has not been confirmed yet and will probably not be until next week. We will let you know more on pupils’ return to school on Monday 20th Oct. However school will be on that day but some services may be affected.

For S4 pupils, you will also find information relating to the Spotlight exams, immediately after the October Week.

Girls’ Footballing Success

Congratulations to Barrhead girls football club on the first week of their 7-a side league winning 4 out of 5 games against teams across Glasgow. They managed this with only 6 players!! This was an outstanding performance for Iona Ross, Demi Richardson, Chloe Blakey, Iona McDermott, Tia Mure and Victoria Docherty.

Under 14s – Football Result

On Tuesday night, Barrhead hosted Mearns Castle in an entertaining game which finished Barrhead 7 Mearns Castle 3.

Barrhead started brightly with Cameron Stewart scoring a hat-trick and Blair Richardson also scoring, in a superb first half performance. Barrhead made changes at half time and Mearns came back into the game with a stunning free kick from 35 yards and a penalty kick. Barrhead then got their own penalty when Dean McLaughlin was brought down in the box, with Lee McTernan slotting the resultant kick into the bottom corner. Cameron Stewart then scored his 4th of the game following good work on the left wing. Eddie Fleming completed the scoring, slotting the ball in from close range. This was an excellent performance from Barrhead in their first game of the season. Well done boys!

East Renfrewshire Diversity Day

On Thursday, 4th September 2014 Harun and Varun Kooner entertained P6 pupils from Carilbar, Neilston, Cross Arthurlie and Springhill and Auchenback Primary schools as they participated in the East Renfrewshire Diversity Day.  In the morning the pupils attended an Exhibition of Faiths and Cultures, participated in an Art Competition and developed their team building skills through various Sporting activities.

In the afternoon Harun and Varun gave an instrumental celebration of Diversity by playing the Dohl drums.  As they played all the pupils danced and enjoyed themselves.  A variety of awards were given to pupils and schools and Mary Montague, Convenor of Community and Community Services gave her closing remarks and celebrated the achievements of all.

Harun and Varun are active members of the Glasgow Dholis who are a vibrant and versatile group of young Dholis that have the passion to play the Dhol (Indian drum).   The Glasgow Dholis play along to a variety of popular and cultural songs – including Punjabi and English and Harun has also played his Violin in a cultural fusion within several events.

Another Record-Breaking Set of SQA Results for Barrhead High!

34% of S5 pupils achieved 3 or more Higher passes, beating last year’s best ever of 31%.

14% of the S5 pupils passed 5 Highers – a rise of 2% from last year but not quite matching our best ever 15% in 2012. Again 5 pupils achieved 5 A passes in their Highers.

25% of our S6 yeargroup passed at least one Advanced Higher beating last year’s best ever of 18%.
