World Porridge Day – Thurs, 10th Oct

Our Youth Achievement Award Group are organising a charity event to raise money for the charity, Mary’s Meals. The group are planning an event around ‘World Porridge Day‘ (Thursday, 10th October), which seeks to raise awareness of the hardships experienced by children in developing countries.

On Thursday, both students and staff will have a bowl of porridge to highlight the fact that for some children in developing countries that one bowl of porridge is the only meal they will get that day. All pupils who turn up on Thursday, before the start of the school day, to have a bowl of porridge will get a Merit.

In addition, several staff and students have agreed to take part in a sponsored activity – the ‘One Bowl Only’ Challenge. Those taking part have committed themselves to eating only one bowl of porridge on World Porridge Day.

If you would like to participate in the ‘One Bowl Only’ Challenge please see Miss Hunter for a sponsor sheet as soon as possible – the more people who participate the more money we can raise for Mary’s Meals!  If you’re not up for fasting, you can still come along to the canteen, before school starts, on Thursday morning to get a bowl of porridge.

Barrhead High’s Eco-school committee recently met to discuss their plans for the coming year.

In the first meeting it was discussed which projects should be targeted for this year.  Litter is a compulsory one. Transport and Waste Minimisation were the other two project topics chosen.

S6 Boys make the National Team (again!)

Stewart Booth and Jon Faulds were selected this year for the final 10 boys in the under 16 Scotland Basketball team.  During the summer they travelled to Gibraltar to take part in a Euro competition, after a lot of hard games against many different countries, the Silver medal was won.  The boys played well and other teams complemented the boys and coaches on sportsmanship throughout the competition.
More recently on Friday, 13th September both boys were presented with a Gold award from Basketball Paisley in recognition for over 50 hours voluntary hours worked within the club.

Author Sophie McKenzie visits East Renfrewshire

On Thursday Barrhead High School Book Group members attended an event in Williamwood High School with international bestselling author Sophie McKenzie.

She talked about her books and the writing process and read from her new book ‘Split Second’.  We were able to ask lots of questions and then got the chance to meet her personally and get books signed.

Book Group meets in the Library every Wednesday at lunchtime.

All year groups are welcome.
