ERC meets Malawi

MalawiFour of our young people – Nicola Miller, Sophie Turnbull, Callum Scott and Ronan Park-Patterson – are currently in Malawi (the poorest country in the world) with the ERC group of 26 pupils from all the high schools, together with some staff.

They have all worked together to raise money to fund the trip and also allow them to participate in activities that would benefit the local people. They will be working in the Kaponda district that has been a focus for the work of Barrhead Councillor Betty Cunningham for the past few years.

Malawi 2They have set up a Twitter account so folk at home can follow what they are up to – ERC Malawi2015.

Why not follow them?

Fundraising

halloweenWell done to Andrew and Donna Marie who along with other members of the ERC Early Education & Childcare Vocational Programme helped to raise over £300 Glasgow Caring City Child Poverty Campaign.

The students made and sold a selection of halloween gifts at Glasgow Cardonald College.

Under 14s football

footballteamcoloursLast week the boys travelled to Lenzie Academy to play their 2nd round cup tie, on what was a cold and wet night the boys ran out 1-0 winners.

Goalscorer: Scott slotted the ball home from inside the penalty box after he was set up by Owen who ripped open the oppositions defence with a mazy run which started just inside the oppositions half.

MoM: Scott who accompanied his goal with a solid and industrious shift on the right side of midfield.

All of the boys worked their socks off and were superbly behaved, though special mention must go to Hassan who stepped in last minute to play in goals, and despite not being a goalkeeper, managed to keep a clean sheet.

Well done boys, the third round awaits.

S4 National 5 – Supported Study

The link here will take you to the supported study timetable for National 5 pupils in S4 as they approach their prelims. The S4 prelims take place between the 30th of November and the 11th of December. The supported study timetable includes specific planned lessons on key aspects of the courses that will feature in the examinations. Please encourage your son / daughter to make a note of the sessions that are relevant and appropriate to their subjects.

As Head Teacher I know that the prelims are a busy and challenging time for the pupils. However, with hard work and the right preparation, (supported study will play an important role in this), we know that our young people will be rewarded with the success they deserve. Good luck and prepare well!

East Renfrewshire Convoy to Calais

Calais

Leigh Daynes, the director of Doctors of the World, has said that the study by researchers from the University of Birmingham “… exposes the awful truth about the Calais refugee crisis – that it is a humanitarian emergency of the first order in one of the world’s most thriving nations.”

Like other schools in East Renfrewshire, our young folk have contributed to East Renfrewshire’s efforts to provide relief and support coordinated by Councillor Waters and to be convoyed to Calais.

Councillor Waters has asked us to pass on the following:

“The East Renfrewshire Convoy to Calais leaves this Thursday at 8pm from the car park of ER Council HQ in Eastwood Park, Giffnock. They are taking the largest single donation from anywhere in Scotland.  Schools and nurseries from all over East Renfrewshire responded with overwhelming generosity to the appeal.  All parents, children and staff are invited to be there for the send-off. The convoy organisers want to give the families who contributed the opportunity to see their donations leave, and to send the convoy off in style. We hope you can join us.”

Something spooky in Barrhead High

Pupils from the S3 and S4 drama classes, together with over 20 stafimagef, under the direction of Ms Cunningham , donned full makeup and costumes for our first Ghost Tour. The tour guides led groups of pupils and parents on a spine-tingling trip through the haunted school.

Well done and thanks to all those who worked hard to set up the event.

Parental Online Survey

East Renfrewshire Council Education Department are currently reviewing the admin & clerical procedures across all schools. As part of that, they are conducting a short online survey relating particularly to communication with schools and the online payments procedures. We would appreciate as many parents as possible taking part in that to help shape future developments.
