Duke of Edinburgh Update (S4 Bronze Award Group)

The assessed DOFE expedition will take place on Tues & Wed, 6th & 7th Sept.  All students who are completing DOFE with Mr Boag will be out of school on both the Tuesday and Wednesday.

DOFE MEETINGS
To be ready for the assessed expedition, students need to attend the following DOFE meetings:
Meeting 1 – Tuesday, 23rd August from 3.35pm – 4.35pm
ALL DOFE STUDENTS SHOULD ATTEND.

Meeting 2 – Wednesday, 31st August from 2.45pm – 3.45pm
ALL DOFE STUDENTS SHOULD ATTEND.
Expedition Kit Issue
As this DOFE expedition includes an overnight stay, all camping kit will be issued from the Fairweather Hall (Barrhead Road, Newton Mearns , East Renfrewshire, G77 6BB).
The date and time of the kit issued will be confirmed shortly.
In addition, please bare in mind that a £50 deposit is required when the DOFE kit is collected. This can either be cash or a cheque made payable to East Renfrewshire Council, secured in an envelope with your child’s name written on the front.
More info can be found in the presentation, given earlier this year.
Expedition start and finish
The DOFE expedition will start from Barrhead train station. All DOFE students should arrive at the train station (time to be confirmed) with their rucksack and kit and be dressed appropriately for hillwalking.
Students will return to Barrhead train station around 4pm on Wednesday, 7th Sept where they can be collected.
Expedition Kit Return
On returning from the expedition, students will be issued with a date and time for when the kit needs to be returned to the Fairweather Hall. Students are responsible for washing, drying and returning the kit promptly.
Kit that is not returned at the correct date/time or returned dirty or wet may result in the loss of the £50 deposit, this is at the DOFE Managers discretion.

Completing the Bronze DOFE Award
Successfully completing the expedition is the final part of the Bronze DOFE Award. A number of students are a little behind with the other three sections (Skill, Physical & Volunteering). I would encourage them to put some time and effort into updating their eDOFE account so they can gain their Bronze Award this year. All S4 students should aim to have all sections of their award completed by the October holidays.

DOFE – Parent & Carer Expedition Information

Thanks to all the parents and carers that attended the recent Parent & Carer – Expedition Information Evening on Tuesday, 31st May 2022 @ 630pm.

For those that missed the presentation the key messages were:

  1. Students are out of school on Tuesday, 14th of June to complete their practice expedition. Students should come to school for 845am ready to complete their hike. They will need plenty water, a lunch, snacks, waterproofs, a hat, sun cream, etc.
  2. The cost of the practice expedition is £8 and should be paid on Parent Pay ASAP. (There is no cost for students entitled to Free School Meals.)
  3. The assessed expedition will be on the 6th & 7th September.
  4. The cost of the practice expedition is £25 and should be paid on Parent Pay prior to the expedition date. (There is no cost for students entitled to Free School Meals.)
  5. DOFE Students must have at least 2 sections fully completed by the September expedition.  Almost all students are behind with uploading their evidence and progressing their award. The uploading of evidence will be our focus until the September expedition.

Duke of Edinburgh Parent & Carer Expedition Information

Parent & Carer – Expedition Information Evening – Tuesday, 31st May 2022 @ 630pm online.

I plan to hold an online parent & carer information evening which will run through all the arrangements for the upcoming DOFE expeditions in June and September.

S3 DOFE students will need to provide parents/carers access to the S3 DOFE Google Meet through our Duke of Edinburgh Google Classroom.

In order to be eligible for the expeditions, students must attend as many of the expedition training sessions as they can (DOFE Calendar – 2021-22). Failure to attend these meetings will mean a delay in completing the DOFE Bronze Award.

Progress
In addition to the training above, DOFE students must have TWO SECTIONS completed by the time we are out on the assessed expedition in September. All students are currently behind schedule with uploading their evidence into their edofe accounts and submitting each section, to me, for approval. DOFE students should focus on having their edofe account up-to-date prior to going out on expedition.

Next Student Meeting
Our next DOFE meeting will be on Tuesday, 24th May from 3.35pm. All S3 DOFE students should attend this meeting.

Thanks,

Mr Boag

DOFE Coordinator

S4 Work Experience – October 2022

For the attention of parents/carers of current S3 pupils (moving into S4):

It is our intention to place all of our S4 students on Work Experience during the period Monday 31st October to Friday 4th November 2022. Pupils have been informed at a recent assembly and now have responsibility to find a placement that they will enjoy and that is relevant to their career aspirations. Pupils should make their own arrangements, through family or friends or by contacting employers that they are particularly interested in.  You will need to provide the host employer with a link for them to complete before the placement can go ahead. Please see link below for your host employer to complete:

https://tinyurl.com/eastrenworkplacement

The latest return date of the online form is Friday 17th June 2022 and employers may need a polite reminder to submit the form prior to this date. Students who have not returned a form by then will be able to access the schools database to search for a placement. This online form must be completed by this date to allow time for safety checks to take place, well in advance of the placement start date.

If you have any personal contacts who would be willing to offer one or more students a placement we would appreciate your support and I would encourage you to contact the school at the earliest opportunity.  This placement need not be for your own child although I hope as many students as possible will be able to find a placement for themselves. Once a placement has been identified and online form/safety checks have been complete, you will fill out a consent form for your child prior to the placement start date.
