Duke of Edinburgh – Diamond Challenge Event

East Renfrewshire Council’s Young Person Services are organising a Diamond Challenge Event to celebrate the 60th-anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The event will be held at Eastwood High School on Friday, 25th Nov from 3pm to 7pm.

All money raised will help to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people.

People of all ages and abilities can get involved and complete a challenge, either in a team or individually. Participants can take part in a relay involving cycling, running, swimming or walking 60 miles.

Those who don’t want to take part in a physical activity can bake, learn an instrument, hula-hoop, sing or do yoga.

If you would like to take part in the Diamond Challenge, please contact Stuart Boag (DofE Coordinator) through the school office. All participants will receive an allocated time to arrive at Eastwood High School  and complete their challenge.

S6 – Halowe’en Disco

The senior pupils enjoyed a fabulous night of dancing and dressing up at this year’s Halloween disco. The Halloween disco is a tradition at Barrhead High school that this year’s senior leadership team were keen to continue.

The costumes, as you can see, were fun, inventive and creative and the night was attended by over seventy S5 and S6 students. While there were no prizes for the best costume the pictures included in this post will give you an idea of the work that went in to making the costumes, and the night itself, a success.

The Halloween disco is the first event hosted by the senior leadership in support of their own prom, with profits from the evening going towards the funding of the final event of the year. The disco was such a success that there is an appetite for a future Christmas dance! Watch this space!

stem-bbc-1 stem-bbc-2

Well done to our S2 students who recently attended a STEM (Science, Technologies, Engineering & Maths) event at the BBC Production Facilities, Pacific Quay Glasgow.

The students were given a tour of the Reporting Scotland studio before trying their hand at presenting the weather.  In addition, the students were shown how a team of technical employees work together to produce a TV programme.

Well done to our Computing dept. and to all of the S2 students involved.

Barrhead High School Careers Fair 2016

careers-3-jpg

Our careers fair takes place from 6.30-8.30pm on Thursday 17th November.

We have nearly 50 different exhibitors attending from colleges and universities; national and local companies and real people doing real jobs covering accountancy, healthcare, IT, teaching, construction trades, hairdressing, hospitality and many more.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils (and their parents/carers) to gather the information they need to plan their future career pathways.

As we anticipate this will be a very busy evening, we would like to recommend that pupils and their parents/carers attend at the following times:

  • S3-S6 – 6.30pm onwards
  • S1-S2 – 7.15pm onwards

Please note, due to the number of exhibitors attending, there will be no parking available in the school grounds.

Severe Weather Procedures

skiing-in-italyThe snow this week is a reminder that winter may not be too far away. We have rarely in recent years required to close the school due to weather but we need to be aware of the procedures if we do.

All pupils have been spoken to in assemblies this week and should have brought home a letter.

If the school requires to close during the day, you will receive a text to the main contact’s mobile number. We then operate different arrangements for different pupils, based on yeargroups:

  • pupils in S5 & S6 are allowed to leave the building without us contacting parents individually
  • pupils in S1 & S2 will not be allowed to leave until parents have contacted us on the day
  • pupils in S3 & S4 may be allowed to leave if parents give their agreement in advance

See the appropriate letter in the Quick Links on the left for further details and how to contact us.

In the meantime, please:

  • ensure your son/daughter knows what to do / where to go in the event of a closure.
  • Let us know if your mobile number has changed.
  • If your son/daughter is in S3 or S4, let us know asap if you are happy to allow them to leave without contact on the day by returning the tear-off slip.

Let’s hope we don’t need to use the procedures this year!
